Man oh man. This question causes me great distress. I am a dyed-in-the-wool free advocate of free speech. But. But. But. I've posted in the past about cognitive dissonance, which is a mental state caused by trying to hold to opposing view points in your noggin at the same time. Every time I think of it this question I find myself in a state of cognitive dissonace for sure.

Part of me says, "Free speech is the foundation of our great democracy" and another part of me says, "I got the rope, you get the pitch fork and torches".

I don't know.

I firmly believe in the first amendment. It is a brilliant idea and is what separates us from every other country where you can't disagree with the government. (ie China)
But with every freedom comes inherent responsibility. Too many in this country and the world want freedom without responsibility. I will defend your right to say whatever is on your mind, but I will also hold you accountable for what you said and the reactions it causes. If we held radicals responsible for their speech and its end result, perhaps they would begin to hold themselves responsible.
