Does anyone have any comments, thoughts, advice, you're willing share in the use of a dolly versus a steadycam; pros and cons.
When best use one or the other?

Thank you for your attention.

dolly is rock steady. if your steadcam op is a real pro and grwat at what they do they can replace a dolly in some instances and do alot of things a dolly cant, but it takes more time and money. you cat fly a steady rig all day long unless you hercules, but you can ride a dolly till the cows come home. and the precision for nailing marks with a dolly is easier IMHO. ..in the end its hard to say.. i have both. and i use both.. certain situations are better for one or the other.

would I be able to find an acceptable steadcam for under $5000 that won't give a lot of trouble to mount and operate? Do you have a suggestion?

Thank you for help.

I did take a look at the basson system, looks neat.
What do you have to say about it?

I just put the camera on a tripod and carry it around. That's my ghetto steadycam. *laughs*

First problem is your thread title. It should be steadicam OR dolly. Both are not the same and have different purposes. Steadicam offers freeform movement while dolly offers more controlled movement. I would not use a steadicam for a dining scene and would not use a dolly for a walk down a flight of steps. Steadicams don't replace dollies, rather they go where dollies don't easily.

Both are not the same and have different purposes. .

I think Walter summed it up.

Yeah, it's better to use them in harmony with one another than to let one replace the other.

and would not use a dolly for a walk down a flight of steps.

And if someone does try to use a dolly for a flight of stairs I hope they have another camera shooting the crash and burn of the dolly! (That sounds like a Peter Sellers stunt!!!)
