Can this cause any harm towards the camera's internal parts? i have been reluctant to doing it. And if not how big should the magnet be???

LCD's don't function like a CRT (electron gun), so a magnet won't work that way.
If you want that function, you need to use an "invertable" lcd that is common in many portable DVD players.

or you could put a mirror on the bottom of your lcd to invert it....

You are actually not effecting the LCD with the magnet. You are tricking the flip sensor in the monitor that inverts the image when you flip the LCD forward to shoot yourself.
gkskrishn - to answer your question. No, probably not because I hear others using the magnet to flip their DOF adapter images.

I don't have a DVX, but a GS200  and I cannot get the lcd to flip. I have tried the magnet all over and it just will not flip. Anyone have any ideas?

Im tellin you guys....USE A SMALL MIRROR!!!
no worries of messin up ur camera with magnets.
you make like a small hood over your LCD screen...then...you put a mirror underneath the LCD which makes a reflection right side up so you can see it.

Now that's an interesting idea! A mirror...
I tried using the magnet "trick" and I HATED HATED HATED HATED HATED it. It was the most amateur, goofy, bogus, half-@#$$ed way of shooting that I've ever yet encountered. I despised it. Really. It was horrible.
Okay, well, basically it was pretty limiting because there's a very limited range you can move the LCD before <flip> it flips on its own, when you don't want it to. And if you try to shut the LCD and forget the magnet's there... argh. It was just vexing.
So I'd been thinking the only way to go was an external cheap LCD monitor. But this mirror idea is interesting. I'm thinking you could get a Petrol LCD hood, and just slide a small mirror into the base of it.
I wonder how practical that would be. Might be more aggravating than the magnet, but I can't see how... :)

Sorry to hear that Barry. I guess is just a matter of taste, because I did not have any problems (practical or psychological)But I think I know why you have been so frustrated: I do not think you had a STRONG and SMALL magnet (rare earth). Once you have one of those in place, no problemos! The common household magnets WILL not HOLD all the time and WILL let go (of the flip) just when you least expect or "need to". The same result gets out of FX1/Z1 if its LCD is flipped as to have it fold back in its place, but not all the way (leaving it about 3mm from "landing" in place) :

As for the mirror, you are Right. There are limitations as where and how much you can move the camera but not a deal breaker. Best (like you said) is an external screen with or without the flip function (just mount it up side down)

how easy would it be for panasonic to just add a "flip and reverse" feature to their cameras? it probably would be pretty easy and it'd attract buisiness from all the people doing the diy35mm adapter thang.

It cracks me up how Barry always has the most analytical, well-argued, well-researched, and intelligent comments on everything, but as soon as the "magnet trick" is brought up, out come the capital letters, repeated words, and attitude of complete disgust.
I've tried the magnet trick, too, and it kind of does suck, but I definitely prefer it to having flipped footage. (Maybe some two sided tape would help it stick more reliably?) Anyhow, I think it's a bad solution but better than nothing and less convoluted than a mirror, although an external monitor is always best if you have access to one.
Niebs, the ironic thing is that the footage any camera sees (without a 35mm adapter) is natively flipped. Digital cameras/camcorders are programmed to correct this, with film it doesn't really matter since you never see the film until you develop/project it. So not only would the code be simple to implement, it would basically just be turning off other code that's already programmed in. I think the varicam may actually have this code programmed in, unfortunately I doubt the hvx will.

Yeah, I guess I may have exaggerated the level of HATE I had for the magnet... it did sort of work, but in a oh-my-gosh-this-is-so-pathetic type of way that I couldn't stand it. It was one of those things where you stand there and look at everyone around you and say "I cannot believe I'm doing something this pathetic". "Oops -- the magnet fell off again. Quick, somebody crawl around on the floor and find the stupid magnet, willya?"
Oh well. I figure the money I save on Grecian Formula (to correct the gray hairs that I got from trying to use that dad-blasted magnet trick) will quickly pay for a little LCD monitor that rotates...

Barry,
What I had is a small magnet found in electronic shops and has two small holes in them. I looped a cord through it and attached it to the base plate of my 35 adapter. I measured the length of the cord so that when I "drape" the cord from the bottom, over the opened LCD it is on the right spot on the LCD's side when it is taut. This way,
1. You don't misplace the magnet, its always with the 35 adapter
2. You always have it on the right spot
3. You don't have to use tape.

i asked my mom for a makeup thing and she gave me this neutrogena case with a really good sized mirror in it. i left it in the plastic and hot glued foamcore wedges on the side then make little straps to go over the lcd out of thin cardboard. the mirror is the perfect length for the dvx and when you look at it from the correct angle you can see the whole screen up and down....
its great...

How well does that work out doors? The LCD is crap outside in the sun anyways. But was just wondering. It looks like a great idea, good job.

its really pretty good it the sun, since i paintmarked the inside of the supports black it reduces some glare (in the pic they are reflective from the camera flash) .
the lcd is turned down so the sun doenst really hit it...
its not perfect, maybe by putting an lcd hood on it, it would be better but for now its fine for me.
i recommend trying it, even if u go to the store and buy the same make up with the case that i used it will cost u 5$ max.
