View Full Version : jittering output
I am using ae 5.5. I import a micosoft dvavi encoded file into ae, then use color finesse to cc. I render as a microsoft dv avi and get jittery footage. It runs smooth as glass for 10 seconds then jitters fo two or three. This repeats throughout the film. Whay am I doing wrong? could it be related to the fact that I goofed during shooting and shot some in 24p and some in 24pa? It was all captured in premiere 6.0. If this is the case is there a workaround?
Thanks

The PA footage footage may be a little jerky in fast motion unless it's converted to 23.98.
Also check to make sure you have matching fps and size and set field to lower dominant with field render if you're working at 29.97
Thanks Scot, all the things you mentioned were in order I double checked, but still jerky. It reminds me of filn that's not lined up with the sprockets. Going to try QT output to see if things improve.
Problem goes away in Quicktime...WTF !!!

Could it be in the fact that the Quicktime Sorenson compressor is much more forgiving about things like frame rates and Frams sizes?
Microsoft DV codec excpects, no, DEMANDS 720x480 29.97 fps to encode properly. I will be that if you make the entire thing again out of AE (remebmber in the Render que to go to Current settings and put your feilds back on (I usually forget) and render it out with a different compressor like DivX, your problems may dissapear. Therein may lie the problem.
It may be that the mixed footage is being all put together and than encoded with a DV codec who is quite strict about its formats. If that's the case, can you isolate the jerky parts, convert them to a 29.97 composition using precompose or however, and reasemble it nesting everything into one final comp that is NTSC DV? You may even want to choose frame blanding on the parts that need converted the most to smooth everything out a little more.
Just as a test, make a composition in AE that is 735x495 at 24 fps and try to make a Mcrisoft DV out of it. You SHOULD ge the error that the format is not supported by the compressor. That may be your problem.
Quicktime, is not so picky, so maybe that's why it plays?
Dunno. Hope that helps.

CLick on the "When to shoot 24p? 24p Advanced? 30p? " Hyperlink and many of your questions will be answered.
It seems that in a 60i timeline, 24p and 24pa will have definate dierences in playbeack. not terribley noticable, but there. You can always convert your 24pa back to a 60i or NTSC Dv format seperately, and that will be probably your best option. Good link. I hope I can turn it into a .pdf.
