Yikes! That's just asking for trouble.
Seriously, I know no one will listen, but don't try gun blanks, squib hits, explosions, etc. without real training. But, if you insist on DIY, at least check out this book:
"Secrets of Hollywood Special Effects"
http://www.amazon.com/exec/obidos/tg/sim-explorer/explore-items/-/0240801083/0/101/1/none/purchase/ref%3Dpd%5Fsxp%5Fr0/102-5425275-0470530
And read the warning on the copyright page which reads:
"WARNING: The book you are about to read depicts special effects that are potentially dangerous. They were created and executed by highly trained personnel under the supervision of a licensed professional. Do not attempt to re-create any of the effects contained herein without proper training, experience, and professional assistance."
Perhaps you won't lose a limb in the process. :-)
Best,
