LMAO! It always has to come back to gear doesn't it????
Does it really matter what camera was used???? Knowing what lens was used, F stop, lighting conditions - those things would be interesting.
Most mags will list the camera, lense, F/stop and other info if recorded.

Not my favourite picture, just a spontaneous shot taken a couple of days ago and I thought it looked pretty cool because of the motion blur. My friend jamming on his newly purchased Theremin. Who can blame him for being that excited? :)
Camera, just my friend's FinePix digital camera (not a DSLR though). I have no idea what the specs would be.
How in the hell do you play a theramin?
Here is one that I took with my D70. Pretty happy with the camera.

How in the hell do you play a theramin?
Hehe, it's quite cool when you can get your hands where it silences the noise, and then if you move you hands slightly outward, or inward, it makes a low hum. We plugged it into my guitar Distortion & Chorus pedals and it sounds really cool in them, particularly the Distortion.
I couldn't come up with a witty response, so that "interesting sounds you can make with a theremin" paragraph will have to do.

Hey Wade, which 15mm fisheye did you use? It looks much less distorted than my 15mm fisheye.
It was the Canon EOS 15mm fisheye.
http://consumer.usa.canon.com/ir/controller?act=ModelDetailAct&fcategoryid=151&modelid=7321 (Canon 15mm fisheye)
http://consumer.usa.canon.com/app/images/lens/ef15_28fe_586x225.jpg
Are you shooting digital or film? If digital, which camera?
I shoot with a Canon 10D digital SLR and yes, the image doesn't look as distorted as you would expect. My understanding is that because the CMOS sensor (frame of 'film') in the digital camera isn't as large as an actual frame of 35mm film, the image is different. I believe it makes it more equivalent to maybe like an 18 or 19mm fisheye lens...someone please correct me if I'm wrong.
Sirius_Doggy
07-28-2005, 01:37 PM
Wade - You are correct. I'm not sure what the crop is on the 10D. I have the 20D which has a 1.6 crop so that would make the 15mm fisheye a 24mm wide angle on my camera.

Kai...I did some research. Both the 10D and 20D have a 1.6x crop factor, while the 1D has a 1.3x crop factor. I couldn't find the info on the 1DS.
I've found that on the 10D, it's a very useable fisheye lens. I can take a photo that shows obvious distortion:
http://www.extremesoundonline.com/photography/bride.jpg
or I can take a photo that almost appears to look normal. What sucks is that when I want the crazy fisheye effect, I can't get it :-(

Was this at dusk or literally at night? I'm just curious since the shutter doesn't look like it was open very long and the mountain is more visible than I would normally expect. Did you paint the mountain with a flashlight or?

Thanks Kai, I had a good laugh about the whole light thing also. To answer your questions Shaw, it was in the middle of the night and the shutter was left open for 30seconds. If I was shooting straight up you would have seen the stars moving more. But because the shot was aimed more at the horizon the stars didn't move much. I also boosted the levels in Photoshop just a tad to bring out the mountain. Thanks for the comments.

San Pedro harbor, same night as the Friendship Bell photo. They only gave me a little bit of "Are you Al-Qaeda?" questioning when I was down there shooting in the middle of the night. ;)
Camera for the 1st two is my D100, last one is my N90s, probably 200T film, I don't remember. NBCshooter, the lens is my 17-35 AF-S. On the digital, so effectively around 25mm. Great lens though.
nice stuff throughout here. A couple people shots, seems like there's not too many of those here yet:

There is some really great stuff posted here. Thought I would post a few shots from a project I am working on. the show opening is this December, here are the first 5 of 10 that I have completed. All were taken with a Pentax 645 medium format camera, either a 45mm or 75mm 2.8 lens and all were multiple exposure and composited in photoshop. All prints will be 45x45", and I have to say, it is really cool to see your work blown up that large.

If you don't mind shooting slide film, you're going to get the most vivid, vibrant color out of Fuji's Velvia, which comes in 50 and 100 speed. The 50 is pretty much the default in the world of landscape and architecture photography. Not generally recommended for flattering shots of people, it tends to make skin tones look sickly red.
Here's a shot with Velvia 100:
http://www.sigma3.org/photos/r4/aspirin.jpg
I also like Kodak's NC160, which is a print film. You can get some pretty interesting pastel-like color rendition out of it. They also have a VC (for "Vivid Color") but I always found it lacking compared to the Velvia.
Here's an example of the NC160 I shot. The skin tones are super buttery.
http://www.sigma3.org/photos/r4/rickphone.jpg
Of course I rarely shoot film anymore at all.

08-25-2005, 12:02 PM
dougspice, do you just have a really nice scanner to digitize these?
dougspice
08-25-2005, 02:39 PM
Yeah, when I shoot film I tend to get it scanned by the lab or service bureau. Out of the 3 film shots I've posted, two have been slide film, so it's pretty much a necessity to get those done on a true slide scanner. I've worked with A&I here in LA, who are great but expensive, so these days I would probably only go to them for large blowups, 4x5, or dry-mount work. Mostly I use Samy's Camera - I used to work there so they cut me deals generally.
But then again I'm shooting maybe a dozen rolls of film a year now. So mostly it's a non-issue... until I decide it's time to scan my archives, anyway.
Someday I would like to go back to shooting primarily film, but unfortunately the cost is just far too high right now.

08-25-2005, 02:40 PM
Of course the implied part of your question is about overall image quality, and the other crucial aspect of that is "the lens, the lens, the lens." The two shots directly above were shot on a Leica Summicron 50mm. You can't beat Leica glass.

those alienbees look like they have a great quality of light. Are you pretty happy with them? I've never really used many sync flashes, more constant light sources for me. What's the main benefit for you?

The Bees are the best monlights on the market for the money in my opinion. They have good, high power, are built like tanks, and are very reasonably priced.
The benefits over contiuous lighting for stills are numerous. For one thing, It much easier to get a good cotrasty image due to the super high output and nerly instantaneous exposure time. At full power you can make a brightly ambient lit room go completley dark. And on a side note the flash duration of these lights actually gets shorter as power is increased: super helpful.
They are daylight balanced, unlike any continous light in this price class. The light modifiers are numerous and low-priced, and they have built-in optical slaves.
Really, with a few exceptions, strobes should always be used for stills and continuous should be reserved for motion (but like i said, with some exceptions). I will however say, using strobes does take a certain amount more of skill and you should really have a light meter whether your shooting digital or film.

Long time reader, first time poster. I'm just getting into the world of still photography with a Canon Powershot A85 (great digital learning tool before upgrading to something much more expensive!). Here are my additions to the collection:

[QUOTE=scharky]There is some really great stuff posted here.
Scharky, I know I'm way late to this thread, but those images are beyond beautiful... I'll read the rest of the posts to see if you already explained your post tools and techniques, but if you can do this type of post in DV/DVX motion I will bow to your feet and pay you large sums of money for the privilege of studying with you.... I might even convert to a MAC if that's what you use!!
Seriously impressed.

Jarred,
ok, my first thought is: Don't you think the subject matter is a bit distracting, I mean, how can we be subjective?? And my second thought... (actually, to be honest my first thought was inappropriate for the forum, I apologize for being such a simplistic example of what it means to be male!)
so, my third thought is what was the shoot for, was that a commercial shoot?

Well, after viewing all of these amazing shots, I have to admit that I'm humbled and a bit embarrassed that I (unlike most of you), did not start out as a photographer; I admire and appreciate the vision that so many of you DVXUSERS have! I sincerely hope your still photography vision plays out into your DVX work! Keep up the good work and keep raising the bar...

COOL! My friend stayed at the EXACT same place. It's funny, actually . . . We stayed at three different Sheraton resorts in French Polynesia. When we went to Bora Bora, I saw that all the resorts have copied that over-the-water bungalow set-up. I don't even remember the name of this particular resort, but it was my favorite one.

Found the name of the hotel. It's NOT in Bora Bora, it's on Moorea. The hotel in Bora Bora was the Sheraton Bora Bora Nui where I think our suites went for $1,200/night. The Nui seemed like a place more for stuffy rich people. But I much preferred the Sheraton Moorea Lagoon & Spa to the Nui. It had a bit more rock & roll attitude, and it had a large lagoon with lots and lots of fish. This hotel clearly had the best snorkeling of all. The Nui is sort of out in the open ocean and the rooms, though plush, had waaaaaaaaaaayy too much furniture in them.

I have no personal objection but it's NOT allowed here on this forum. I'm sure it would be removed and you would be warned. Good thing you asked though.....
You may be able to get away with a link to it elsewhere instead of a direct photo post...not sure bout that though.

I'm really liking the drink shots!! They really jump out at me, but for some reason that watch shot doesn't.
I think it's because I can't make out why there isn't just an entirely black background. It's frustrating trying to figure out why the white background jumps in for part of the picture. I totally love the DOF though!
