Could someone inform me on how to create a line animating across the screen in After Effects. the effect I am trying for is to have lines growing out to point at different sections on the screen. I am also curious on how to create boxes and squares in AE.

i would craete the graphics in photoshop then bring them into ae then just animate a mask to reveal them. as far as boxes and squares go could you give a little more info

AE doesn't create graphics such as boxes, etc.
You can create solid layers that you can grow or shrink as an image. This have to be recangular (or square) in shape. Comple shapes shoudl be created in Photoshop with an alpha channel and saved in Photoshop format or format that can deal with alpha channels (not JPEGS)
As suggested you can animate masks to reveal a line. You could also move a solid layer mask to do the reveal.
