Testing out concepts for split screening on an upcoming project. We weren't really trying to do anything with the audio or dialogue, the purpose of the test is simply to see if we can get the split screen idea working properly on video. Filmed with a Sony TVR 27 - but, we will be upgrading to the DVX100A very soon.

Looks good. Not sure I'd call it a split screen test. When I hear split-screen I'm imagining the screen split down the center with the left half one angle and the right half another angle.

And that is what it is. The screen is split down the middle so the same actor can appear on both sides. Hrm, not sure what else you would call it... ?

Split-screen is typically two different locations and actors with an obvious line down the middle to separate completely different shots.

hmm, I see no split

OK. So, what do you call this kind of split screen. Where you are trying to seemlessly split the screen to give the illusion that someone is talking to a copy of theirself? It would be good to know, because I've been calling this a "split screen", whereas you guys seem to be defining split screen more as a multi-panel HULK style type thing. Or... showing two people talking on the phone together in the same screen. What I'm doing here is locking the camera down, filming it with the actor on one side, then the film it again with the actor on the other side. I split both those clips down the middle and put them back together so the actor can appear to be talking to himself. I'm not sure if there is another name for this, or if it is just a variation on the split screen?

The two-shot, and OTS shots both have splits. Obviously the tight insert on the glasses, and the CU don't have splits.

Multi-panel is what I see as a split screen and what you did I believe is called split screen as well. It all depends on the context that the phase is used in I guess.

I didn't pick up that it was all done using the same guy! Now I'm impressed! That's really neat how you did that!

How the hell did you do that?

Did you do this in FCP?

No, this was done in Premiere Pro. I basically place on clip on top of another, on separate tracks, then crop the one on top to reveal the actor on the other side of the screen in the clip underneath. Best way I can describe it is... take a sheet of paper, and draw an "A" on the left side of it. Then, take another sheet of paper on draw an "A" on the right stide of it. Put the second piece of paper on top of the first, but fold it in half first, and you will see an "A" on the left from the paper underneath, and an "A" on the right from the paper on top, folded in half so it doesn't cover the "A" underneath. Make sense?

The hard part is making sure you don't cross the fold. If shadows, smoke, or anything crosses the split line, then you have to do some garbage matting or gradient splits.

You can see some still image tests here:

That was done with our home-made track platform dolly!

that makes perfect sense to me! Thanks for sharing it... I'd like to give it a shot tonight to see if I can get the hang of it....

Looked at it again. Sorry - i guess I started the whole "split-screen" discussion. Just that usually when people think of split screen it IS a visible split as others have mentioned. Very nice work keeping the actors in place. I didn't even notice the first time it was the same guy.

Funny, I am working on a music video done the same way. Except I use a shape(black rectangle) on the upper track then use chroma keyer and sample the black rectangle and you can see the other track right through it. Yeah, you have to watch out for anything crossing that line. I speed up one of the tracks and the shadows manifested a thin line between the two tracks. I also used a trv(-70). Keep it up, it looks good.

It was kind of cool because of the same guy doing both sides.

I really liked that first part where you slid the glass to the other side of the table and the camera followed the glass. Nice shot!
