Hello, after watching the movies "PI" and "Requiem for a dream" I decided to make my own version of "the snorri cam". The video itself is nothing special (made it in an hour) it's just me walking around my apartment with some music and sound fx thrown in. After reading the dolly threads I thought some of you might like to make somthing like this also, enjoy.

That's tight! I never knew that was called a snorri cam. That was great. Seriously thanks for sharing it with us. Now I know what to do with my old backpacks. Thanks veidog.

That is fantastic. So then is boredom the father of necessity? Call me an idiot, but how did you attach the wood to the backpack? I'm sure I could figure it out if I wasn't jetlagged, but I am, so I can't. ;D
Killer alternative to walking in reverse with a steadicam.

Excellent work! Very cool veidog - Thanx for Sharing.
I like the storyline but I think you rushed the narration at the end. ;)
Who would have thought something so simple could produce such cool results.

I hear ya... I really didn't put much thought into any storyline. I pretty much made it up on the spot. I was mostly interested in displaying the kind of shots you can get with this setup. How cool would it look to be getting chased down some stairs, I think it would capture the intensity of the scene really well. I have an idea for version 2. Eliminate the tripod and mount the camera lower on the subject, that way you would be able to get better shots from the front. :)I'll keep everyone updated... mark.
Cool! Thanks for posting here!
Can you post some pictures??

Voila indeed! I agree a slightly lower angle will push those shots over the top.
Hey, did a little googling with no luck -- why is it called a "snorri cam?"

the term "snorri cam" *(i've also read SnoryCam) was brought by Daren Aronofsky the director of Pi in an interview, and it seems that this term turn generic in the indie world. the regular term is simply Bodymount

BTW, incredibly clever invention , i'm definitely making one !
And for those who have bought a StickyPod, i think if you change the wood plate with a light steel one, you can get an amazing toy to play with...

I read that Pi was the first movie to use it (which is surprising since it really is a simple idea), but did he just make up the term?

I think Scorsese used it, or something like it, in Mean Streets in '73. It was attached to Harvey Keitel in the bar scene near the end of the movie. Anyone know what I'm talking about? ???

Also the movie "Seconds" circa 1966, a John Frankenheimer joint, has some shots also. This may have been the first movie to use one. I have never scene this flick though. Here are the photo's

I love this do-it-yourself oriented community. I shop around pro outfitters for equipment to get certain shots, etc. only to find that there's no way I could afford everything I want.
Then I come here and find everyone making the coolest things that effectively get the job done, all made with simple items purchased at the local hardware store. Amazing. I'm so impressed with this group. Keep it coming.
Thanks mark veilleux 4 the pictures!
Monte, yes I know that video. It was cheap but cool!

Very clever idea. Some really nice shots too.
Only problem is the backpack is visible in most of the shots, because of the straps. What if you were to use one of those Abdominal excerise belts instead? It would fasten to your waste (out of view) and then the tripod would attach to it. Not sure.
Anyone have one of those belts lying under their bed?

As far as the backpack straps go, in Queer as Folk (1st Season) they simply had the actor wear the straps under his clothing. It looked pretty effective, you can't tell he's wearing it at all.
I'd actually recomend checking out the QAF DVD's, specially the last disk in each set that contains the making-of info. There's some great tips for building underwater rigs ect. as well as examples of shots the crews got and used in the Showtime show.

These MIGHT work as well - Can get them at Home Depot and such for back support - Bout $20
Straps may be easier to hide - Next time I'm there I will look one over

Right you are! The rig also used very well in "Pi" was named after the Snorri brothers.
Read on:
"What makes the Snorris' work unique is how their film is crafted. Individual frames or photographs are combined in a collage to make one shot. Most often, a pivotal focus remains centered while the background rapidly changes.
Signed to Stink in the UK and Smuggler in the US, the Snorri Brothers - Einar and Eidur - have been directing since 1998. Natives of Iceland, the pair followed a photography career to the US in '97. They shot a fantastic video for REM's "Daysleeper" in 1998 that combined 10,800 stills; have pioneered a body-mounted camera called the Snorri-Cam; worked on Hummer and Kenneth Cole this summer; have shot promos for Simple Minds and Brit band The Streets, and spots for Polaroid, Radio One Holland and Benetton among others. And in 1999, the Snorris were featured on the Saatchi & Saatchi New Director's Showcase.
However, their intensely specific style - and way of working - has kept them from exploding into the mainstream. But the Snorris are also busy with a screenplay, a flip book and music. "
Here endeth the lesson...

the actual origin of the 'snorri cam' is based on the early Greek storytelling method called "schiffus", which is a derivative of the latin root word "schiff", which of couse means 'to see'. They used to tell stories in such a manner that the storyteller was actually telling the story to his or her self. This evolved over the years into a singular storytelling method that didn't require audiences, and eventually led to the development of non-verbal entertainment. The idea being that if one no longer needed to communicate with an audience, then one did not need to speak. This eventually led to a 17% drop in global verbal communication and the often-maligned art of 'miming'. It was only natural that the practice would manifest itself in the description of a unique self-recording technique. So you see, this goes back way further than you think.
So there you have it. The origin of snorri.

Thanks. Yours is cool. Mostly from the Lovecraft based flick about the vilage that sacrifices wayfarers to the water god, I think? They have kind of an auquatic zombie vibe in that movie.
Some of the banners are really super impressive and I don't have the time to come anywhere close to that so I just did something ridiculous.

veidog,
thanks for posting the new link!
cool stuff!
don't know if anyone here is an ex (or current) doom/quake fan, but when i watch that from behind POV it just screams to me that that could be exploited so well with the right combo of talent (in a movie, and NOT a uwe boll movie)!
