View Full Version : Maya and AE
now I have a Maya. How can I work with Maya and AE at the same project? Should I work in Maya or in AE? If I only needed 3d objects or some scenes from Maya, how could I export them? Or should I try another 3d software?

well your questions are very vague. you can do 3d in ae, but nothing like you can do in maya. are you familiar with maya at all?

You can do your modeling and animation in Maya. Render with alpha channel and import into AE for the final composite (if you're adding to live action). If it's all CG you could do the full scene in Maya.
i am new to maya. what does CG mean? and can I import a Maya scene without rendering to AE? or can I just import a 3d objects?
for example how can I do this: a man is walking on a bridge. I have recorded the scene in a Blue-Box, and now I would like to use virtual camera, and I would like to build a virtual 3d bridge. so how should I coninue if I have the bridge in Maya?

CG is computer graphics.
If you're doing a virtual shot then stay in Maya since it's designed for full 3D. After Effects is a compositor with some simple 3D support.
be sure to check the manual or search the help files in Maya or After Effects.
well, now I am reading the help files of maya. but can I do keying with maya, like in AE?
when I import a *.ma in AE it imports the locators and cameras but not the objects. why happens this?

I'm sorry, but you clearly have so much to learn (no offense, we all did when we started and you seem to be making amazingly fast progress) that it's not worth our time teaching you what you'd learn better from another forum or from books. Learning Maya over the internet is impossible anyhow. There's just too much. You have the money to buy half a million in software, otherwise you wouldn't have shown interest in fire, etc. Surely you have enough money to buy a book on After Effects and a book on Maya. For a really good set, it will cost a couple hundred tops. Otherwise, try cgtalk.com but expect people to have even less patience than they do here. In your situation, I'd probably just hire a CG guy to do the effects for my movie. It would cost way less than half a million and you'd get great results with minimal effort. Just my two cents.
well, I am learning now Maya from books, and I am reading the help, and the lessons, but I need to do some scenes now, so need a little help about this object import in AE. I don't need lessons over the forums

What do you need to key in Maya? Are you combining live action and computer graphics?
After Effects isn't really meant to render full 3D objects. That's what Maya is for.
Maya isn't meant to be a compositor, that's what After Effects is for.
Typical workflow- Do 3D modeling, animation and rendering in Maya. Use overlay functions to check placement and action. Render images ith alpha channels.
Import into After Effects and overlay these 3D images over a live action scene.
More advanced work would be to use 3D info from maya to control fog level, special compositing of multiple 3D objects, etc.
yes. I would like to combine live action (a scene recorded in Blue-Box) with a 3D world. I see. Thank you very much. I hope I succeed!
so the overlay is going to be on the alpha channel?
