I thought they were all pretty amature looking and "cute"(like most short films try to be) EXCEPT J_Barnes' :) & "Bedford Village". I sent mine in and didnt even get a mention and thought it was better than all of them. But it aint my contest :)

I don't know how this was judged, but for best looking video (not to mention best short subject overall) I'd have to go with Play Date.
But, whatever - these things are subjective.

Hmm...I wish they would have told me they were going to post it online. I would have corrected it for monitor gamma.
At least that horrid shoot day turned into something mentionable.

In this set of productions stills, http://www.seriousmagic.com/bestshotimages.cfm?id=2, you can see, especially in the first still, the difference in color between what I'm assuming is a digital still camera and the DVX as seen on the DVRack screen. Can someone point me to a thread that would explain this. The still, although needing more light, seems to me to be a more aesthetically pleasing image.
Thanks

Looks like the digital camera was set to daylight and not corrected. Thus the orange cast, while the DVX is set to tungsten (or some white balanced variation) and thus appears white.

Woo-hoo! Found out recently that I had the "grand-prize" winning entry, and just saw the results posted on Serious Magic's website! Am ecstatic that I won! ;D
When I spoke with Serious Magic today, I mentioned that I had found out about their contest from DVXuser.com - many thanks to this site (and to you who post here) for your technical and creative expertise!
Barant - I'm definitely surprised that your "Cheat" film wasn't mentioned - I thought the acting and dialogue in it were fantastic, and the lighting/coloring looked great!

Barant,
Thanks for entering the contest. "Cheat" was well rated by the judges (it was in the final selection group). Most felt that it was an intriguing idea and had excellent acting but "Content" (concept/acting/script) only counted for 1/6th of the score. Any such "judging" is always highly subjective since video is art.

I agree, the concept and acting was great, but it was all shot in one location, and there were only about three changes in camera angle, not exactly enough to judge from, but nonetheless, good job.

I got 3rd place.I shot with a 60 watt lightbulb only.no other lights around.which makes me more of a firm believer in "it doesnt have to be what everybody say it should be" mentality.you can view entries

Hey, thanks for the kind words! We're pretty happy with Bedford Village, though there is certainly room for improvement.
(If you like it that much you can always vote for it in the December DVXUser contest... entered it there, too. *grin*)
James, I really liked your piece: great ending!
Thanks to the folks at Serious Magic for running the contest and giving us all a chance to show our stuff!

I just wish I knew it was going to be posted online. The version I sent in was not balanced for monitor gamma, so there's one or two shots that are way too dark when compared to the NTSC version.
Doug, that was some serious production value there!
