My audio lags behind the video in Prem Pro 1.5 after a minute or so of playback. Also, it kinda runs slow (takes a bit to come back up after minimizing, some tasks take a minute to accomplish such as deleting from the timeline, switching menus, etc. I'm assuming I need a faster processor. Here are my specs:
AMD Athlon XP 2800+ (2.08Ghz)
1 gig of RAM
620 Gigs HD Space with 2 250gig western digital hard drive (SATA, RAID0, 7200rpms)
What would I need to upgrade from Premiere Pro 1.5 to run smoothly?
Thanks!

do you have programs running in the background? your specs should run it fine.

I dont run any programs while i'm using Premiere. Is there something I should do before starting Premiere? I just start the computer and dont use any other programs when i run it. I dont have a virus scan on that computer.... is there anything i should do before i start premiere?

is there programs ruinning by default when you start the computer up? theres nothing you should really do ahead of time but try to shut off other things using up any system rescources. if all is well and its just choking with drift and having that bad of synch issues ..yeah you might want to think about upgrading. not sure why your current setup wouldnt be fine, but sometimes the numners dont add up to performance. .. anything else you can think of that might cause a problem.. IE : effects applied or modifications to audio or video streams... ect

Not really... even on just a plain edited sequence before effects/transitions applied it lags. I thought it was the processor cuz they recommend 3 GHz and i have barely over 2GHz. Other than that, I can't think of anything that would cause the lagging. I disable all my other programs from automatically starting... things like AIM, MSN messenger, etc... hmm i wonder....

1> run msconfig and see how many things are running under the "services" and "startup" tab. Turn off everything that's not needed. You might be surprised by how much stuff is running in the background.
2> How long since you drfragged your harddrives?
3> You mention multiple harddrives. You are using different drives for AV storage?
4> Have you ever connected this computer to the internet? You mentioned that you don't have any virus software running........

I'll try that when i get home. I have the Raided drives for Video/Audio ONLY and the other drive for the OS and Premiere. As far as defragging, my system says I dont need to defrag. Should I do it anyway?
Thanks,

Is there anything under those two tabs that I should DEFINITELY keep ON? I don't wanna screw anything up hahaha.
Thanks,

Look at the descriptions - If you know what it is and don't need it, turn it off.
If you can't figure out what it is, leave it on.
Make sure you click the radio box on that says "hide all Microsoft..."
Leave those alone.
You'll be amazed how many small apps are running that are not needed.

Ah, do you have service pack 2? I used to get really laggy playback when connected to a DV device for playback - Service pack 1 didnt have a problem - although I havent tried it with ppro 1.5.1 - btw did you get the 1.5.1 update from adobe?

I have Service Pack 2. As far as I can remember... Service Pack 1 gave me the same problem. I didn't get the 1.5.1 upgrade cuz I don't use HDV. Premiere 1.5 is extremely taxing on my system. I was thinking about upgrading to a P4 640 Prescott (3.2Ghz). Seems good enough. Would the 2MB L2 cache help at all or should I just go with 1MB L2 cache and save some money?
Thanks Sirius, I tried that after reading your post. It did help a little bit but I still get the audio delay. It's not a big deal I guess. If I stop playback and restart it again, the audio is fine. If it plays for longer than a minute... that's when the audio starts to fall behind. It's weird....
Thanks everyone! Enjoy your 4th!

3.2 will be good - the 1.5.1 update includes some other fixes as well - I would get the 2mb L2 cache that helps with video processing/ rendering. get the latest audio drivers for your soundcard and increase the latency in premiere's audio preferences.
