Spotted a photo shoot near my place so I asked if I could grab some video. The skater, John, was popping big air over the hydrant. Here are some grabs from the footage.
Oh, shot 24pn and a default shutter speed to start and then switched over to 120.

yeah ... that's what I'm talkin bout!!!
24P is tough with sports (high energy / fast movement) but I'm all about big air and olly's over the hydrant!

Yup. That's at the top of Telegraph hill on Filbert street. That's also my bike commute climb home. :P

Yup, but I was digging the colors and wanted to play with some 24p action and the opportunity dropped in.
Btw - The best quote was from the guy when I played back some of the footage:
"That looks like film. What camera is that?"
Gotta love the dvx! ;)

I am having trouble getting my settings right for snowboard video. Please recomend dvx settings that you find capure the best footage. I am using the anamorphic lens.
if you shoot at a faster shutter speed it will help a lot. try 1/250.

What are the problems you are having? Using an anamorphic for action work is tough because of the focus issues. Are you having problems with that?

Did he land the kickflip over the hydrant? Just wondering cause it looks as if he was close, but not close enough:) The colors look great in the grabs. nice stuff.

I shoot skating and snowboarding and I really don't have any problems shooting in 24p. I think it just depends on how you follow your subject. Bye the way Hans the grabs look good. I little on the reddish side but it does look like you got these durning sunset. It doesn't look like that guy landed any of that stuff, I could be wrong.

Yup, the grabs are just before sunset. Didn't tweak any of the scene settings so the color is as the camera grabbed it.
He did maybe 50 attempts but couldn't stick it. Very close several times though. He finally busted the front of the board. He had the skill but needed more run-up. That might have given him the space to grab 2 more inches of height. Then the board would have cleared. But the board kept on tapping just a bit off the hydrant and then twisting different directions.
Cool to watch.

That's usually the thing filming skating. You can be there all day just trying to get one trick in. But when its something big and with style then its worth the time.

Yeah, I really wanted to have him stick the landing. Would have been a very cool shot of the landing and then having him carve away down the hill.

I don't know about that carving down the hill after that trick. I know the hills in SF aren't to be underestimated. At least as steep as I remember them being when I went skating there a couple years ago. It is a really good city to skate in, other than the cops giving out ticket like there's no tomorrow. If you want to get some other shots of people skating, a good place to hit up is Pier 7. They got some cool blocks there to skate and there's usually tons of people there. The only thing I would recomend if your going to do that is go there with a group of people because it can get a little shady with the people down there. I have some footage of a guy getting punched in the face while on his motorcycle down there. Saddly it isn't on the DVX or I would post it here.

No more... they put metal tabs on the blocks to stop skaters. >:(

Heh, it's no longer like that. The whole stretch along the Embarcedero is filled with joggers, strollers, bikes, people... It's been totally cleaned up.
The city is actually rather safe. I ride around all parts of it without problems. But, like any city, street smarts is important.

Yeah, I haven't been down there in a couple years. That sucks about those skate stoppers. EMB use to be the spot to skate in SF, along with Union Square and Hubba Hideout. It looks like every good spot is becoming skate proof.

Embarcedero? Hrmm, I alaways wanted to skate Emb when I was growing up. I loved watching those guys kill that gap there. some of the lines in the old vids capped at that spot were my faves. Oh the memories :)
