Are you sure you typed "dvc30"? Are you sure it wasn't "wild honeys"?

Seriously . . . the DVC30 has been discussed at length in the forum. A search should bring you tons of info.

looks like a good back-up camera.

I just picked up one to use as a backup camera for my dvx100 (older model).

Things I've noticed so far:

Build quality seems excellent. Overall it just feels more solid than my dvx. This extends to the tape transport which on my dvx always sounds a little tempermental.

Picture wise it's very close to my dvx in normal lighting. With normal gamma settings on both the dvx has a slightly flatter image. The cinegamma settings are much improved on the 30 giving the image a richer look with seemingly more latitude. The 12bit processing really pushes the 30 and I would say that overall the image is more accurate than the dvx100. In low light the dvx100 is still a good stop or two brighter naturally because it has larger ccd's. However the dvc30 is cleaner. This is one of my big gripes about the dvx was how noisy it gets at 12db. 12db on the DVX is about as noisy as the dvc30 at 18db. However the dvx can see better into the shadows and where there is hardly any light. Really it's a toss up as long as you have at least some lighting.

I was a little dissapointed that the 30 did not have a true progressive mode. However it's cinemode isn't bad. Compared side by side the dvx delivers a sharper more refined image in progressive mode.

Control wise nothing beats the DVX. The 30 offers just about as much but more of it's menu driven. Nonetheless it's still fairly easy to use compared to my trv900 and canon gl1.

If you shoot primarily in 60i as I do then the 30 should make a good inexpensive 2nd camera.

In my opinion if you're planning on shooting a feature with any sort of budget over 15k then to wait for the HVX200 and rent one. Eventually you'll wish you could have it on HD.

The DVC30 I think makes for a good 2nd camera or for something to tool around with until HD arrives.
