View Full Version : AC160 Indoor Recordings, lots of backlight, on-camera Rode mic

The following recordings were made with 1080/24p 1/60 indoors in a room with floor to ceiling windows from about 20 feet away, off of a 7 foot tripod with some ND filtering and set the F-stop based on the WFM display readings.

Sound was picked up by an on-camera Rode Videomic.

The singers' faces turned out to be a little too dark, so I applied a small amount of Sony Vegas Pro "fill light". This seemed to give a better result than applying "brightness and contrast".

Suggestions re how to improve would be appreciated.

Hey Walter

Nice job there and lots of work too!! You handled the exposure with all that backlighting very nicely..I would have been sorely temped to pull down the roller blinds behind the ladies!!! Your hours counter on your camera must be climbing steadily!!! Did you try the area function that the 160 has so it would tend to expose mainly on the ladies. When I still had the 130's I couldn't get it to work that well though!!....

Another excellent trick to use in Vegas is to ignore the backlighting and then on the timeline add the following plugins "invert" then "colour corrector" then finally "invert" a second time. Set the invert sliders to max on both. Now, what happens is the first plugin inverts the image, you then have a reversed image so the windows will be very dark (you won't see it as the 3rd plugin resets the invert) Use the chroma, gamma and gain sliders in colour correct to get the exact exposure you need. Because the CC plugin is working on an inverted image it has a much easier job and a huge range!! You can actually expose the faces correctly AND the windows without video noise...works a treat!!!! It's a little know secret that can save a badly exposed backlit piece of footage!!!
