Last year I joined as what was known as a CEA Tech Enthusiast as part of the Consumer Electronics Association (The enthusiast program is now defunct). One of the benefits was creating an account at Panasonic. I was also able to create and account as part of "friending" Facebook. Today I took advantage of the CEA membership as I was able to buy the Panasonic Lumix H-FS045200 Telephoto zoom lens - 45 mm - 200 mm for $164.96 plus $9.90 tax. I checked and the same lens was offered at $199 for Facebook members. If you have some sort of "membership" at Panasonic, check and see what price you might be able to get for the lens. The lens is currently on back order, but last year when I got a great deal on my GH1, the wait was only a couple weeks.

I've actually grown to really like that lens. It's small, has a killer range (especially with ETC mode), focuses fast, and the bokeh is surprisingly good for a zoom lens. Just make sure the OIS is kicked in before snapping. It takes a second for some reason. People say it's not sharp from 150-200mm, but I think it's plenty sharp.

Some people are probably sick of hearing this story, but there was some weird system of discounts and rebates at the Panasonicdirect website in 2010 that must have been a mistake. I happened to log on and looked at the 45-200 lens. When the price was adjusted for the Panasonicdirect discount and the current rebate at the time, the lens was available for $20. I bought one for myself and one for my brother who also had a GH1. I kept thinking they were going to cancel the order, but sure enough the lenses arrived and I still have it to this day.

And I thought I had a good deal! :) I'm jealous!! I keep looking for a deal on the 20 mm lens but so far the best on the Panasonic site has been $359.

If you can manage to get the Panny friends and family discount, the 45-200mm is only $120...pretty sweet deal!
