View Full Version : Using gradient as a blur map?

I want to have a gradient - which goes from black to white - be a map for a gaussion blur, or any type of blur. So basically at black it is full blur and as the gradient moves the blur lessens and lessens until the rest is normal.

How would I go about this? I'm sure it involves master and slave compositing or something, just not sure how to go about it...

hm....well....you could try this..

Make a white gradient on one side..making the black part trasnparent
On top of that..put the black gradient side on the transparent section of the bottom gradient.

Then make the other side of the black gradient transparent. Apply the blur effect
Cut out a rectangle shape using beizer going vertical on the black gradient...and in the middle where it fades...make the beizer edges realllyyyy feathery....then i think that should work..im doing this off the top of my head on how it would work.

Then when moving...make sure their keyframes match.

Correct me if im wrong.

or

i just thougth about this...
Make one gradient...black and white
Next layer...put an empty event..or white color and make it transparent
Apply the blur to the top empty event and jus animate it to move around.

The answer above sort of boggles my mind--but then again my mind is easily boggled by compositing. The way I'd do this is to:

1) Create your gradient in Photoshop (655x480 pixels) as a PNG or JPG image or use the gradient media generator in Vegas and put the gradient on Track 1.

2) Duplicate your video so it's on tracks 2 and 3.

3) Click the Parent/Child button on track 2.

4) Add a Gaussian blur to track 3.

That's it.

I have a black to totally transparent layer

Blow that I have two more tracks

Track 2 is parent and track 3 is child

Both have the same clip in them

Track 3 has the clip with the gaussian blur

It doesnt work, can you explain it in more detail? Like what compositing settings I should have on the parent or whatever, I can't seem to get it to work..

:)Ok, I'm at my edit station now. Here's my revised instructions.

1) Create a white to clear gradient in Photoshop (655x480 pixels) as a PNG or JPG image or use the gradient media generator in Vegas and put the gradient on Track 1. For the compositing mode of track 1, select Multiply (mask).

2) Duplicate your video so it's on tracks 2 and 3.

3) Click the Make child button on track 2.

4) Add a Gaussian blur to track 3.

Thanks barry, works quite well
