Video Capture in Vegas 6

Yeah, this is beyond elementary, but first time going to capture with 6, and I'm posed with the Q:

Please select a video caputure method:

Use External Video Capture Method (DV, Video for Windows, or third party capture application)

OR

Use Internal Video Capture Application (HDV / SDI)

What's the difference, and how do I know what I'm capturing through? All I'm doing is hooking up the cam via firewire to upload ... was never asked this Q in Vegas 5?

Help? I'm litterally waiting until I get a knowledgable answer before I capture this stuff. Thanks in advance.

I usually use the External Capture Method...cuz the first thing i saw was DV so i was like..ah ha, its DV..and yea...well...what kind of camera are you using? an HD or SD?

Shoot with the DVX (SD), and then use a little JVC as my deck to save the heads on the DVX. So what's SDI as mentioned in the second option?

SDI stands for Serial Digital Interface

its considered like..the "best" way to capture..because it doesnt lose quality in the sound or video of the footage...its used on Satellites and DVD recievers.

well...i guess in this case...im not gonna jump to conclusions and say that External is the best way..because i still have to read up about Vegas 6.0's features...but i would just stick with the External Capture Method.
And I was wondering the same thing when i went to capture..which one do i pick...i tried the Internal Capture Method..and for some odd reason..it didnt want to capture..i dont know why...so then i just stuck with External Capture Method. Hope i helped...a tad...

Thanks blckhawk542, it helped more than a tad. Although I don't understand how audio/video quality could be lost using a different method than SDI ... since firewire is pure digital as well.

i have no clue either...im guessing the External capture method is meant for Standard kind of footage..and Internal for HD? iduno..i gatta start readin...oh boy..its gonna be a lonnnnggg nite....
