I've been waiting for this, but I didn't expecting to be able to use it on my recent GoPro model, I rather expect new camera with this specification. This is great, no more macroblocking water droplets in my surfing footage!

I was waiting to see if they were coming out with a new one this year because I heard mention of a more professional model but this might be it. I got the first one and will pick up the 2nd one once the bugs get worked out of it after the update.

Nice.
Lack of 24p was the one thing holding me back. Everything else is gravy.

Awesome stuff. Love my two GoPros. Just bought a third after hearing this news. Wish they'd get the WiFi BacPac out the door.

Talked to a guy at GoPro when I ordered the new Dive Housing (awesome, btw), and they are moving back the release date of this upgrade to "summer." He said end of June/early July.

Looks like its coming very soon. Can't wait for the pro tune upgrade. 24p and 35Mbps on a Gopro Hero 2. How come Go pro can juice up the Mbps with firmware and other companies can't or should I say won't ?

Well in the case of for example AVCHD, there are many companies locked in together. They have all agreed on the specifications and therefor they can't just change them whilly nilly. It's actually a monopoly, which is illegal, but not to worry..

I picked one up yesterday and despite being able to do the software update I couldn't get the BacPac to talk to the Hero2.
In fairness to GoPro I really think Best Buy had sent me home with a re-packaged/returned unit . . .
I returned the BacPac his morning and will wait for the iOS/Android software availability, then order direct from GoPro.
The possibilities are endless!

GoPro bougt the Cineform company, so when they came with new Hero 2 with lots of computational power it was just the matter of time when they implemented powerful Pro Cineform Codec capabilites in it. ... I was moaning about higher bitrate on their Facebook page all the time... and voilá ... :)

Just an FYI. The current firmware release by Gopro is not the pro tune update that gives higher bitrate and 24p.

Correct . . . It is basically version 1 of the software tweak that permits the Hero2 (and hero) to communicate with the wi-fi BacPac . The "stream to the web" and preview/control with your tablet or smart phone features are "coming soon."
As you point out this has nothing to do with the increased data rate or CinemaScope venture . . . But these are certainly wonderful times we live in, for sure.

Anybody heard anymore news about the new firmware update? I'm looking forward to the announcement... between this and the new Dive Housing I think I'm really going to notice an improvement in some of my surfing stuff, both above and below the surface.

Yeah, between this and the "coming soon" features for the wifi bacpak software features I'm wearing out my keyboard checking their websites (GoPro & Cineform) every day.

Just checked their website, now says: "Additional features* coming Fall 2012 with free software update.
GoPro App: use your smartphone or tablet as a live video remote—includes video and photo preview and playback.
Wi-Fi transfer your favorite videos and photos from your GoPro to your smartphone or tablet to share with friends.
Live stream video or share photos and videos directly to the web from your GoPro, wherever you have a network connection—including using your Smartphone as a hotspot. "
Will still be worth waiting for but, Waaaaaaaaaa!

Summer is over and new ProTune firmware uprgrade in nowhere....!!
Damned all my summer footage is ruined with horrible macroblocking again!!! Sh*t, I hate it.
check this out. They used a bunch of go pros. Don't know if they got some help from go pro with modified cameras with protune but it looks great and has gotten amazing reviews and awards.

Article about the film and the gopros they used.
"Part of the appeal of the GoPro footage — especially in the pitch-black night scenes, with movement sometimes registering as ghostly afterimages — was that it lacked the definition of more expensive cameras. “The footage seemed to be much more opaque in a good way,” Mr. Castaing-Taylor said. “It activated the viewer’s imagination much more.”

Yo guys, the other night I sent an e-mail to GoPro in regards to the ProTune update, I got this response just now:
"Hi Simon,
Thanks for getting in touch with us.The Protune firmware still does not have a release date, but it should be launched this Fall."
Shouldn't be too long now I guess.

According to GoPro's Senior Director of Software Engineering David Newman's Twitter, ProTune is now available for the HERO2 via GoPro CineForm Studio.

Gopro refers us to Itunes for download...Itunes has app for iphone and ipad...no Android...
edit...gopro support will get back to me in two business days. I guess they didn't anticipate Android users wanting to use the app.
Downloaded the latest cineform studio...it allows a version update to the cam, does not seem to be pro tune, no 24 frame...

David told me that Android will come up next.
I understand that the majority of film guys are Apple based, so it makes some sense to deliver that first.
Not that I gonna like that decision, but I understand it.

Just cycled through the new updated camera...no 24 fps. The latest cineform studio has nothing to indicate pro tune awareness. Has anyone heard anything about how or when pro tune is supposed to be delivered?
Found 24...gotta search a few cam menues...instructions would be nice

so the 24p and higher bit rate is now available for the hero 2 cam?

Yes.. After you download the most recent version of GoPro Cineform Studio and install(from their site), you then attach your camera to update your firmware. When it's done you'll have a "Protune: on/off" setting in the camera's video menu. With that you'll be able to choose 1080/24 or 25p amongst others. One weird thing though is when you turn the Protune mode off you lose the 1080/24, 25 option. The resulting files are confirmed at 35mbs and are lower in contrast, saturation and sharpness. In a good way..

No active preview after pressing the record button in 1080/24 but I can live with that.
Seems like there was/is preview after pressing record when Protune is off (I've already forgotten . . . but it's late!).
There's a pretty substantial lag time anyway. Who cares? (I don't).
Maybe there will be tweaks down the road after they get the Android version out . . .
Hard to complain (for me anyhow), the price is right.

Nearly died yesterday , I did the firmware update and the update seemed to get stuck in a loop with lights flashing and small symbols flashing on the LCDof the GoPro,this happen after disconnecting from the PC. So after nearly a hr ,I phoned the local importer/agent , ask to speak to a tech ,she did not seem to be the brights peanut in the packet , after explaining to her the second time what was gone, on she said I must remove the battery and then redo the update , if this did not resolve the problem my GroPro would be replaced it with a new one. so I do this after putting the battery back , It went back in to the loop but this only took a minute and I was updated with the Protune and working . I see there are other settings on the Gopro in Protune, there is a 720-60t ,960-48t,1080-24t,1080-25t and 1080-30t but where is the 720-50t or 960-50t or 960-60t?, other than that I am very happy, after a small test yesterday it seem to give a better pictures and via the software fine tuning the picture works great.

After a Email to Go Pro about the lack of other pal frame settings , they have told me Pro Tune does not support PAL , Nice one way to go GoPro if this is away to start loosing your customers.
Al MacLeod
10-26-2012, 06:54 AM
So how does it work with PAL...is the only difference the frame rate, 24 vs 25? Is there something else to separate NTSC from PAL?
GavinAbe
10-29-2012, 12:25 AM
The only setting you get is 1080p 25 pal the rest is ntsc . GoPro could have add some more code lines to the firmware, which would have not taken long, I think this a poor show on there part, it would be interesting to find out the user base ntsc vs pal.
