OK, we have been having this problem at work, seemingly at random. We edit in Adobe Premiere Pro 1.5 on a Sony Viao. The majorty of time, everything works just fine, but once in a while (most recently today), when we go to "Export to Tape", it is grayed out (like when the timeline window isn't highlighted) and we cannot figure out what's going on. We can just play it and crash record over firewire, but that sometimes gives us little clicks and pops in the audio (whereas export to tape doesn't). We have been able to export an avi, bring it back in and it works but obviously this is not ideal. Has anyone had this problem or at least some guesses on what could cause it. Oh, also, we have a Gateway with Premiere Pro 1.5 as well and it doesn't have the problem nearly as often, but it has at least once.

You may want to try saving the timeline, closing PPro completely and re-opening it to see if that solves your problems.

..sounds like you already figured it out before you asked the question, but you have to have the timeline highlighted in order to export to tape- export to movie.. or frame or audio .. or export anything from the timeline for that matter. pretty easy. just click on the timeline first.
..if your current selected area of interest is the effect window. you cant use the export to anything command.. the program needs to know you want to do something with the timeline, so just click it to make it the current selected area of interest and then you can use the export commands.

Try using a different camera to export to tape...

On that note, are you sure that you have your camera turned "ON" in VCR mode and connected via firewire.
