View Full Version : GH2 Thinking of selling Nokton 25mm for Sigma 30mm & 85mm 1.4. Thoughts?

Hey guys,
I recently bought the Nokton 25mm 0.95 and Noktor 12mm 1.6, and I have to say, the 12mm has given me more of a 'wow' factor than the Voigtlander. It's given interior shooting a new lease of life, while coming from the solid if unexceptional 20mm 1.7, the Nokton is obviously a nicer lens, but given the grand price tag, it hasn't really amazed me. Yeah it can see better than my eyes in the dark, but I don't know when I would ever use 0.95 shooting drama.

So I'm thinking of selling the Nokton and buying the Sigma 30mm 1.4 ($400) and 85mm 1.4 ($800). So for just $200 more I'll get a 30mm that's fairly close to the Nokton in terms of quality (from what I've seen, please correct me if I'm wrong) plus a fantastic portrait lens in the 85.

Thoughts? I haven't used the 30mm but I have used the 85, although it was stuck wide open with my adapter, but I assume you can buy an adapter with aperture control? So then I'll have the 12mm 1.6, 30mm 1.4, 50mm 1.4, 85mm 1.4, all similar apertures.

Any reason to pay $800 for the Sigma 85mm, when you can pay under $300 for a Samyang 85mm f/1.4?. The Sammy has excellent reviews out there, and great feedback here on dvxuser as far as using it on a GH2. I actually bought one, in a Nikon mount and have done some portrait photography with my D300, and it's an excellent lens for that purpose as well. If it were me, I'd keep the 25mm, and just buy the Samyang, you can get it as low as $269.00 brand new. The thing is, that you already have the 12mm, and there may be advantages to keeping everything in the family so to speak, for a consistent look, so that's where the 25mm would come in, especially if down the road, you may want to spring for the 17.5mm at that point you'd have the 12, the 17 and the 25 for a very consistent look.

Keep the Nokton, get the Samyang 85mm f1.4.

You will not be disappointed in the Samyang. Also consider the Olly 45.

You'll find the Samyang is often referred to by the other name it's sold under, Rokinon.

Yeah the Samyang wide open doesn't seem as good as the Sigma. Tough decision!
