I was messing with Vegas6 last night and I was wondering... I started shooting a feature in 24pn (because I'm using Premiere) but since Vegas automatically converts the blended BC and CD frames into a progressive C frame with 2:3 pulldown... can i switch to 24pa mode now? cuz doesnt vegas discard the frames you dont need automatically? so if i combine 24pn and 24pa, it really shouldnt make much of a difference if i switch right? i know 24pa will give me better compression and what not, but I was just wondering if I could switch and combine 24pn and 24pa in one timeline without any adverse effects. In Premiere, You cant really do that....
thanks,

You will have *no* problems. Vegas only removes pulldown once it’s on a 24p timeline, and then it’s pure 24p, whether it was shot Normal or Advanced. No special settings needed for capture. Just capture and drop.
But I’d start on a new tape when you switch.

Dumb question: Why does Vegas only specify removing "2:3 pulldown" in preferences. If you shot in 24PA, wouldn't it have to remove 2:3:3:2 pulldown?

That's what I thought Jubal... thanks! Oh and I had no plans to record 24pn and 24pa on the same tape.... But thanks for the warning!
Yeah, I was wondering the same thing that KMCGRATH posted about.... Hmm.....

At default settings, Vegas removes either. You don’t need to worry about it.

Yeah, that's what I found awesome about Vegas.... just wondering why it says "removing 2:3 pulldown" instead of "removing 2:3:3:2 pulldown", but whatever... it works for both so who cares right?!
Thanks again!

Exactly. Vegas is a magical program that can pretty much do anything with zero hassle.

I wouldn’t go so far as to say that , but handling 24p is a frickin’ breeze, that’s for sure.

I agree that Vegas makes a lot of things really easy. I just wish they would document things a bit more clearly (like the pulldown question I posed above) so that you don't end up wondering whether the correct pulldown has been removed. That said, I find the Vegas manual in general to be an excellent source of information.

I just noticed that Vegas shows "removing 2-3-3-2 pulldown" at the bottom of the Explorer window when a 24PA file is highlighted (and presumably also shows "removing 2-3 pulldown" when highlighting a 24PN file in Explorer). I feel better now :)

Oh so it does say that?.... whoops.....
Can someone clarify something for me?
Say I shoot in 24pA
Do you guys manually set your capture settings in vegas to 23.976 or whatever the number is, or do you continue to capture at 29.97?

At default settings, all you have to do is capture. Then, drop the footage into a 24p project, and pulldown will be removed.
While you’re capturing, you’ll see the frame rate as 29.97, because that’s how it is on tape. But rest assured, when you work in a 24p project, you’ll be working in native 24p.

Captured 24p media remains 60i on your hard drive until it is brought into a 24p project, right? So if you wanted a 60i project from 24pn or 24pa media, you could do that by changing the preference to not remove the pulldown in a 60i project?

It won't remove pulldown in a 60i project. Also, you can switch your project settings back and forth from 24p to 60i, at will.

In Vegas that is true. Other editors don't do it that way, but Vegas does, so yes you could do exactly what you're saying.
