Grettings,

I finally got my ag-dvx100a last month. I shot a few things in the past weeks with the 60i settings. Nice image and no big deal for the editing part because I am quite used to this format.

But now I am going to shoot a small clip in 24p advanced mode. I need the film look on this project, and I aslo want to mess around with magic bullet to see what I can get ot of it.

I have yet to find a very clear and detailed tutorial on the 24p advanced workflow. So here are my questions , and I hope that knowlegable people can awenser these or redirect me to some usefull tutorials :

1- What would be the best accepted settings IN the camera's Seen File for film look at 24p advanced ?

2- Can I use another camcorder ( cheap 1ccd ) to use for capturing AG-dvx footage ? I seemed to have an audio problem ( 48khz 16bit ) last time I tried with a canon elura...

3- Should I use DvFilm Maker to remove the 3:2:2:3 pulldown ? If yes , what settings should it use for output ( 24 ? 23.98 ? ) in order to work fine on the Premiere 24p timeline ?

4- I have a hard time to understand the After effects composition settings to accept a 24p adv footage. The reason I mention Afterfx is because of the magic bullet plugin. I will start to learn AfterFx when I find the time this summer, but for the moment I would only need it to play with magic bullet...

5- Back to premiere. Big question here about outputing the final edit. I want to be able to output either to tape ( for mtv type television channels ) to .wmv for web broadcasts and/or streaming , to normal computer compressed xvid .avi , and finally to normal DVD and to progressive scan DVD. I am VERY VERY confused about the different ways to output 24p footage.

I would have 5454598798754 more questions here , but I guess this is enough for now. Anyone's help will be greately appreciated...

Thanks !

Okay, here are some quick answers for you:

1. Best setting for 24pA is the F6 Scene setting. Just do a white balance, and voila, 24p Advanced without any headache!

2. Absolutely! I use a cheap canon (ZR50) and I don't have any problems capturing.

3. I edit in Premiere Pro 1.5, so pulldown isn't an issue anymore. In fact, Premiere Pro 1.5 can better handle 24pA than 24p. If you're using Premiere Pro 1.0 or earlier, it treats your footage just like 60i, which isn't a big deal since the tape you send to the tv station will have the pulldown back on it, but the 24p footage always has its distinct look.

4. Can't help you... I don't use After Effects yet.

5. I'm going to let someone else explain this. I get confused trying to explain it...

Thanks for the quick answer Justin ,

1 - I do use the normal default f6 scene file for 24p advanced. But my question was more about the tweaking of the different settings IN that f6 scene file...

2 - cool

3 - I just heard ( or read ) that premiere pro had some issues with the 24p preset , But I was unable to get precisions about it...

thx

softfx, there used to be a really good page on the Panasonic web site describing 24p in plain language. It's probably still there. Sorry I'm too lazy to look for it myself.

I know what you mean about wanting that film look, it could be a little tricky to get the settings right, we just started shooting a feature with the dvx100A. We shot our last 2 featurs with the Canon XL1 and learning the settings on the DVX100A was pretty hard, not so much learning them but getting them all right to get the film look. I think the best thing to do is keep it on the f6 sceen settings, maybe turn the master ped a little more towards the negative to keep the blacks black. the blacks tend to get milky with this camera and turning down the master ped a few notches definitely helps this out.
