I'm currently using Premiere Cs5 & 5.5 for editing and exporting. I've been experimenting with different formats looking for the best quality, and now with moving to AVCCAM from HDV I'm curious as to how everyone is exporting.

What settings are you guys using for Youtube and Vimeo?

I don't use Premiere, but from Final Cut/Compressor, I'll export to h.264 in an MOV wrapper. Data rate is 5mbps, i always deinterlace if it is interlaced material and change output fields to progressive. You can choose the highest quality, depending on how long the video is (for youtube limits) Audio is 48k, and I use AAC codec for the web.

If exporting for Vimeo, do not do not do not do not export to h.264. Vimeo's bugged (unless they've fixed it in the last month) so that when you export as h.264, sometimes it will show up as really dark and contrasty on Vimeo.

I found success with Vimeo just by exporting as a WMV instead.

Thanks! I didn't know that. Here is a thread describing this problem:http://vimeo.com/forums/topic:46866

Anyone heard any word on Vimeo fixing this problem?

I don't think this "problem" is specific to Vimeo, rather it deals with the issue of h264 encoding and h264 players expand the 16-235 color space to 0-255. The solution is to conform your levels to 16-235.

I'm familiar with Sony Vegas, however, I don't know how other NLE's deal with this.

Here's more information: http://www.bubblevision.com/underwater-video/YouTube-Vimeo-levels-fix.htm

Hope this helps,
...Jerry
