View Full Version : Mixing 24p and 60i
I have a project that has some street festival footage shot on a one-chip camera in 60i. Next week I am going to shoot some footage of the two NPO's supported by this event. My thought was to shoot them in 24p, probably using the factory "scene 5" setting, to give it an obviously different look and get some experience mixing modes.
Is this a good idea or a bad plan? I could shoot it in 60i, and mess with the gamma and stuff enough to make it clearly set apart from the street fest. Just shooting it with the DVX will give it a different look. But I would like to give the NPO footage a nice "serious documentary" look about it, whereas the street fest stuff is more marketing/fun...
Are there are "gotchas" about mixing 24p and 60i? Can I even effectively mix them in a single output file? Is there a tutorial around that would get me started right (like project settings, render settings, etc....)?
I only have 3 hours on my DVX, so talk to me like a child....

I have a similar question, I am shooting in both modes on the same tape. Also a low time user and am trying hard to catch up on good capture habits to make post easier.

I recently shot a wedding(1st cam DVX-100a 24pa mode) and forgot about the 2nd camera being an XL1. The footage was mixed. Had a tough time getting them to co-operate in the same project. I finally used the ultimateS trial to convert the XL1 footage to 24p. It may not be the best way but was acceptable to the client. I would like to hear of more ways to do this also??? I would advise shooting some test footage and playing first.
In case anyone smart answers us, I just want to be clear that I am NOT trying to match two different sources, I WANT them to look different. And I have trouble seeingteh differnece between 24p and 60i, so I am not even sure I have the render/project settinsg correct. I guess I should just try it, but I sure would like some clues about how to best do it.

if you mix 60i and 24p on the same timeline it wil not play correctly. If you set to 24p the 60 i footage wont play without jumping, if you set it to 29.97 the 24 p footage doesent look good either. Hope this helps.

Telecined film is pulldown exactly the same as 24p (not 24pA) so there shouldn't be any problems
mixing 24p video and 60i video that I have experienced. I cut film all the time in FCP without
a reverse telecine (in other words, like 24p, not 24pA) and never have any problems.
Think you'll be fine. If not, feel free to alert me for providing bad answers.
Wells, I am thinking I should have a 60i project & timeline, and let the 24p do its pulldown thing. Correct? I will try it next week.

Right. Shoot 24p (2:3:2:3) and cut in a 29.97/60i timeline and you should be alright.
If you want to get into the messy details, it should not work.
In everyday use, however, it works fine.

One of the cool things about Vegas is that it’ll do fine with pretty much anything you throw at it . . . and if you want, you can always change the project template (from 29.976 to 24p and back again) any time you want, to see which is working better for you. You don’t need to worry about pulldown; Vegas handles it for you. When you do your final render, you’ll be in great shape. (Just don’t monkey with settings you’re not sure about; use the defaults.)
The only issue might be using 24p Advanced footage on a 60i timeline -- it might look a little more stuttery. This isn’t because of Vegas; it’s because of the way the frames are grouped in the Advanced pulldown scheme. But the effect will be slight if you do notice it.

thanks for the tip on 24p. I'll use that next time I have to mix instead of the 24pa!!
