Does a picture that I saved as a jpeg file have to be converted and saved as a PDF file in order to bring it into Photoshop? I say this because when I select the image I want to bring in which is a JPEG image it is greyed out making it un selectable. I thought you would be able to import any kind of picture file into photoshop.

I know that I can import JPEGs into PS on my mac. Try just right clicking on the file, and opening it with PS. If it doesn't work, look what error message it gives you.
Yeah, it should definitely work. I'm not sure why the file isn't selectable, but you should be able to open any JPEG image from the File --> Open menu item. In fact, if you add ".jpg" to the end of any file, you'll should be able to select and open it ... you'll just get an error reminding you that it's not actually a JPEG image. :)
