View Full Version : Why is My Photoshop Text/Graphics Pixelated in Premier?

When I place text (or any hard edged graphic) from a Photoshop file into Premier the edges are always pixelated (ragged). I create the Photoshop file use Photoshop's DV preset (720x480 at 72dpi).
Is there something I'm missing??

Thanks!
Joe

Are you trying to resize, zoom in on the graphics? Photoshop's not the best program to use for text as it's image based. You're better off using a vector based program like Illustrator or the text abilities inside Premiere....
You may also want to make sure you have "Optimize Stills" preference checked in your Premiere settings.

Does it still look pixelated when you print to video? It could just be the way Premiere compresses the image file for viewing on their video window.

No, not trying to resize-- I'll make sure "Optimize Stills" is checked-- I'll post later on it.

To be quite honest, Illustrator never even crossed my mind. I'll give it a shot.
I only use Premier's text program if it's a quicky need for standard credits or something. I do a lot of presentation work and my graphics/text need to be creative and look smooth.

Thanks!

Something I'll need to check out-- I'll post on this later as well.

Thanks!

I thought the later versions of photoshop produced vector based text? Could it be your font choices ie truetype vs Adobe type manager fonts....Just a guess.

i woudl be willing to bet its just trhe variable res of the monitor window and that he hasnt rendered the footage yet. ..premiers monitor window shows variable resolution in order to keep the framrate up while doing effects or compsiting ike titles and such ect. once you render it it should look fine. or you could just switch the monitor to "best quality" and see what it will look like when rendered .. but it will likely drop alot of frames pending your PC speed.

I'm using a 3 gig system witha gig of RAM. I always have Premier's monitor res set at highest quality without any frame loss.
I did some extensive testing the other day (but only using one font-- Bickham Type 1). I created just my name from edge to edge (720 pixels) and exported it in the following: tiff, psd, eps, targa, jpg. Some looked better than others, but there was still pixelation or ragged edges. Rendering actually made it look worse, and after exporting to avi it still was ragged.
I'm using the Matrox ExtremePro card, possibly it has something to do with that??
All I know is this is getting very frustrating as my recent work has been requiring a lot of text.

hmm.. i have theRTX 100 xtreme pro as well, and the monitor window isnt full res with it.. but it does output full res to your monitor. text overlays with a key are generally very sharp and crisp on my system though. i frequently import from photoshop. but normally when im doing that sort of thing im doing it in AE. otherwise you can just use the titler in PPRO and get sharp fonts from it. it works pretty well and can use any true type font on your system. again they are always sharp on my system whether its a matrox project or not. AE's (6.5 pro) text is also true type and vector based for rock solid text effects.

what are you using to key the text? ..is it keyed? if its an issue with the key that could cause jaggies. id use a simple luma key and be sure that the text is solid edged. try doing a simple text key in a non-matrox project and see if the reults aret the same. that should clarfiy if its matrox based or not. does the text look sharp without a key applied in PPRO? ..meaning are the files pixelated to begin with from photoshop? or do they pixelate when imported and put into the timeline.. or after the key. im sure you can narrow it down to when the problem is occurring. if its on import, theres somthing wrong. files import fine for me.. if you have photoshop CS be sure your doing the images at 720x480 at .9 pixel aspect. ..not sure what to say.. i just dont have this issue.. well have to narrow it down to at what point the pixelation is introduced before a resolution is likely to surface.

if that fails id use the built in titler from PPRO.. it used to suck but its actually ok now. using actuall true type fonts its pretty much as sharp as its going to get for an SD project.
