View Full Version : Will having too many hours hurt my resale-wise? How many operation hours do you have?

Like a car that takes a massive hit @ 100k miles. I just bought this thing last week used with 14 hours, and now I'm up to 20. I've just been doing test shots and working on scene files. I have a hunch I will have hundreds of hours on this thing in no time. Obviously it's a solid state recording device and that shouldn't matter, but I'm thinking of screwing around with interval recording - I can see the hours really climbing up.
Thoughts?

strange that you are thinking about resale value! If you are an ameture it will bring more satisfaction, more joy if you use it a lot. It will bring more money if you are a pro. Why bother about hours.

I wouldn't worry about it. There are no real moving parts, it has a three year warranty, and I'm pretty sure it runs the hour clock just when it is powered on and not necessarily recording. FWIW I'm up to 200 hrs on each of my af100s.

It's funny you should post this. As a Ferrari owner this comes up a lot, and there are two different camps. The waxers, who wax their Ferrari every weekend but don't drive them for fear of putting miles on it. And drivers, who drive their Ferrari like they stole it, without regard to resale value. I've never understood someone owning one of the best cars made only to not drive it and save it for the next guy.
My thoughts... Drive it like you stole it! You own one of the nicest cameras out there, use the pajesus out of it while you have it. After all, did you buy the camera to shoot with, or save for the next guy?
All the Best!

Same as above, no worries-no moving parts. Use it, abuse it, make cash with it. I do not worry about resale, at this pace- electronics are changing so fast, I believe most cameras are worth very little after 2-3 years anyway. Especially at this price point.

Use the hell out of it. I don't/wouldn't abuse it though, warranty or not.

It is a tool not a show piece. Use it. I never think twice about the hours on any of my cameras. I do worry that they are well cared for and will work properly.

More hours on mine means more dollars it makes. ( I have never even looked at the Hour Meter but I do look at the cashbook.)
Not even thinking about resale value while it does this for me but obviously replacement comes into it at some time.
My planning is that replacement is only a Camera Body next time round because everything else will transfer.
Current body paid for it self first job.
Not sure how the hours affect the resale for vendor or purchaser. Look after it properly and that would negate whatever the hour meter says IMHO

Thanks for the replies. Yes, it appears the hours climb just being powered on. I have a 2004 Lexus LS430 with 143k miles, and I love driving it everyday.
Just watch this thread in a couple years - I will probably be the first one with 1000 hours on this thing! I plan on doing some 24 hour time lapse stuff. I've just never owned a real cam before and coupled with the Oly 14-35 I am simply stunned at the image.
I don't make money with it yet- I honestly bought it to shoot my adorable young kids and my buddy's band for free. May never earn a check either - don't care. Other guys like me in their late 30's probably spend this much on beer in a year and have nothing to show for it, right?
To whomever mentioned the Ferrari - I picked up a 1991 Twin Turbo Nissan 300zx last year with 31k original miles, rust free Texas car. It's about to hit 40k...and the last 9k miles have been wonderful. I take good care of her and have gone overboard with maintenance, but not afraid to put my foot down and enjoy her. Will take the same approach with the camera.
I just wanted to hear others on here tell me to not worry. :)

I still have my HVX200 with thousands of hours on it and it still works the way it did new. Just shoot.

Hours only really matter on cameras that use tape based media IMO. Run your AF into the ground >:)

This is my favorite thread of the week.
Yes, whatever you do, don't use your camera because it will effect the resale value!

There are thousands of hours on my original DVX100. I've never had to repair it or service it. Such a workhorse! I don't worry about the resale value and I'll probably use it til it dies (same goes for my 1996 Cadillac Eldorado ETC with 185k miles on it ... my "work car")
The DVX is the least of my camera collection. I shoot sports highlights for a local sports-coverage website I started four years ago (www.douglascountysportsonline.com). Good weather or bad, it's the camera I turn to for this type of quick and dirty stuff. When local TV hires me for some highlights, and they need it in 16x9 or HD, I go to my HVX200. Different tools for different situations, but I've never worried about how much money I might be able to sell them for later.
I've haven't been able to get my AF-100 yet (I've stuck with HVX w/ 35-adapters & bypassed the DSLR trend), but my hope and plan is to use it for many many years when I do.

That's nothing, I'm up to 369,000 miles on my work vehicle, a 2005 Mercedes Sprinter van. It's like the fricken energizer bunny!

Same as above, no worries-no moving parts.
During extended filming last week I noticed an almost imperceptible noise coming from inside two different AF100s, much like the sound of a spinning hard drive, & wondered if there's a fan inside that only kicks in when the cam get's hot.
