Hi guys,
I'm shooting a short film over the weekend with my recently acquired DVX100AP. We'll shoot everything 24p and cut the film on a Matrox RTX10 editing station.
Question is: what is better? Can I go on and use Matrox DV capture (it does 29.97 fps) or must I use the Panasonic 24p support in Premiere, which will make me render all the footage and cut my access to the output monitor and transitions/effects?
Any help is greatly appreciated!
Thanks!
Beto Skubs.

It depends if you're going to use a 24fps or 30fps timeline. I believe the Matrox codec only supports 30fps. If you want 24fps timeline, then you have to use PP1.5 only.

If you shot 24p normal footage, use the matrox. If you used 24p advanced, use either the ppro preset for software or the matrox as they both will work.

So I'm still a little confused on this point.
I have PPro 1.5.1 and the Matrox RTx100 card but I've always used the standard Pro 24p timeline to edit my 24Pa footage which means loosing the realtime output to the monitor.
Are you saying I can edit 24Pa footage on the standard Matrox 30frame timeline and see it real time?

I don't use an RTX100 (it crashed my computer the first time, and I never re-installed it), but from what I understand, you can do it. Why don't you give it a try and see. You should also be able to edit the 24Pn with the Matrox card in 30fps timeline.

You spent :smiley_up$:smiley_up$ on a 100 card and it crashes once so you don't use it???
My computer used to crash on rare occasions before I got the RTx100 card but I didn't toss the computer in the trash...
Just curious...:undecided
Thanks for the tip though. I'm gonna give it a try tomorrow....

I have done 2 projects 24p Advanced on the matrox x.100 preset for 29.97 - it works fine

The RTX100 does not and never will support realtime 24fps. However, you can edit 29.976fps on the RTX100, realtime, even if you shot it 24PA. If you want to edit 24PA natively, you have to edit in 'Panasonic 24P' mode in PPro 1.5, but you lose the realtime support from Matrox.
Now, you can still view your output from PPro 1.5 even if the RTX100 isn't assisting; there is an output setting on the monitor window somewhere which allows you to select outputing to firewire. What you will get in the monitor window is a graphic saying that 1394 output is enabled, in various languages. You have to have a firewire capable monitor, or a DV digital-to-analogue converter, or maybe your DVX100 will output a component stream while receiving input from its firewire port, which you can then run to a big monitor. Make sure the DVX100 is in VTR mode.
PPro doesn't edit 24PA in realtime like the matrox, but it tries manfully to give you something to look at, even if the framerate is degraded. If you take the time to render your 24PA clips, they display at the full framerate.

speedbump - thanks, that's what i thought.
Soar - I'm guessing that what's happening when you do this is the 3:2:2:3 pulldown is taking place as you put the video on the 29.97 timeline instead of keeping it true 24p all the way out to DVD???
Barry - I know you are a Vegas guy but can you lend your expertise to this question?

Yes that is correct Sirius - 29.97 with the pulldown inserted from the dvx looks fine to me - 24p all the way to dvd is not always necessary for the film look.

Hi, guys.
36 shooting hours later, I'm back.
Ok, so according to you helpful folks, I'll be using Matrox conventional DV capture to edit my film which was shot at 24p.
I hope it looks as good as we expect. Ah, that film look! :)
Thanks a lot you all, I'll let you know when we get a few sequences cut.
Beto.
