I just bought a betacam and plan to shoot a project late summer. I will get my betacam tapes tranferred to mini-dv in order to get them into my computer to edit. I am hearing that the cheapest way to do this is to buy a cheap consumer dv camcorder for this.

With that said. What are the minimum requirements the camcorder should have? Does it have to have 1394 IEEE input, output, or both? Does it have to have editing protocol? What is editing protocol? What other requirements are a must?

Thanks in advance.

Air - If it's a DV camera, it will have firewire. They all have it.
Your software will need to be able to control it through firewire.
If you already have Premiere follow along:
Launch program/Go to "File"/"Capture"/click on the "settings" tab/under the "Device Control" drop down tab select "DV Device Control/Click on the "Options" button/The new window that opens - make sure your camera is one of the options available.

Thanks, sounds easy enough. For what it's worth, I will be using Premiere 6.5.

Could you tell me what is meant by editing protocol, some camcorders have them and some don't. Is there a difference between Firewire input vs output?

Not really sure bout editing protocol. It's probably the code that allows the camera/computer to "talk" to each other.
As for firewire - it's bi-directional, firewire is an input/output connection.
