Final Cut Pro X 10.0.1 adds several much-requested features, including support for full XML import/export of both project and event information; intelligent stem export for both video and audio files using a new feature called Roles; and Xsan integration, allowing editors in different locations to work with the same files, events, and projects.

Well well well, would you look at that. I should imagine with the XML support, opening older projects would be much more plausible now (via the XML). Very interesting.

It does't work for software update both in FCPX and in the finder...

Dave,

Are all the features available on the trial version ?

A word of caution on the trial version if you are depending on FCP7 and its the same machine.

My understanding of FCPX is that it uses a different form of prores (can someone confirm?) and
there's always a chance that the trial version might disable the prores codecs that come with FCP7.
I don't know but its worth investigating before installing.

Also updates to Compressor and Motion.

Also says on Apple's website:

Coming in early 2012:
Multicam Editing
Broadcast-Quality Video Monitoring

I found Motion in the App Store, but FCPX isn't appearing yet.

Just click on the Purchased tab in App Store application, FCPX, Motion and Comp will show "Update" if you already own it.

Same problem here! Got Compressor and Motion update, but not FCPX. I transferred FCPX from MacPro on my new Macbook Pro, so maybe that's the problem. Still weird that Motion and Compressor have no problem and are transferred in the same way.

No problem here, but I had FCP X on the target drive. I believe you need that.

Still no OMF export, right?

This, along with early 2012 updates (assuming they are free updates) give me hope that Apple does actually care about the professional market. Once multicam is enabled, depending on how it's done, I may switch to FCP X as my main editor.

I'm with filmguy right now. I'm still editing on FCS at work / home due to the project I'm on, but once this one is done, I was going to start the migration to Premiere as I planned for the future. This gives me some hope.

It's in my utility folder, just like Motion and Compressor, so that should be all right. If I activate the install button in the purchased area of App Store I get this message:
Final Cut is already installed on this computer. Choose Software Update from the Apple menu to check for available updates.

Well you can't update with software update so that's weird. Anybody else have this problem?

Launch the App store.

Then go into the updates section at the top after you have logged into your account. The 10.0.1 update should be there.

Motion appeared for me, but Final Cut still hasn't. I've tried the App Store, Software Update and Download Additional Content (from the Final Cut Pro menu). The strange thing is that on the Purchased tab in the App Store, I have the option of Installing Final Cut as if I bought it but never installed it. If I hit install I get the same message Niels gets about Final Cut being installed already. Happening on both my Macbook and my Mac Mini...

Sick... This is what I'm talking about! And we just decided to pull the trigger and switch to FCPX this week. And I ordered a SAN just 2 days ago.

Talk about perfect timing!! :D

Apparently you need to delete Final Cut Pro from your apps folder if you're running into trouble like I was. I did that and am now able to download.

XML import and export is a NEW and DIFFERENT form of XML. It will NOT import XMLs from FCP 7...someone tried:

http://forums.creativecow.net/thread/335/15996

It really only opens it up to third parties to make tools to get to Resolve or CatDV and back. Not to FCP 7, or from FCP 7...or Color...

Can anyone confirm if it does send to/receive from Resolve? That would solve a lot of my problems.

Not yet- but give Resolve some time to update. It's a brand-new implementation of XML.

According to the user's license one can only install this in 5 machines. If you throw it to the trash and install it again, will it count as an extra machine? I'm planning to upgrade my macbook pro in the near future...

Can't it be deactivated before you put it in the trash can, Like adobe products ?

I have a theory on why FCPX wont update for some people. I think if you purchased FCPX and are still on the same Mac OS when you purchased it, it'll update fine. Example: If you Purchased FCPX and you were on Snow Leopard and are still on Snow Leopard it should update fine, also if you were on Lion when you purchased FCPX it should also update fine. I believe the reason people are having issues updating FCPX is because they were on Snow Leopard when they purchased FCPX and updated the OS to Lion and are now trying to update FCPX. I bet it's a bug in FCPX, Lion, and/or the App Store that can't tell that the Mac is the same Mac after the OSX update. Just a theory, but I've called my friends and asked them and it seems to be the case with everyone I know.

We did the update a few hours ago. Haven't done any significant projects or work yet, but it seems to be just fine.

Disheartening. Well, I don't know why I even got my hopes up. I should have known better.

That's not the case for me. I was on Snow Leopard when I installed FCPX initially as well as when I tried to update it yesterday. It didn't work. Same error as others. When I trashed FCPX and re-downloaded it from the App Store, it included the .1 updates. I haven't upgraded to Lion yet.

Yeah I read the same thing a few other places as well. Well there goes my theory. I haven't been able to update yet. I don't need FCPX for a few days so I'll wait to see if Apple comes up with a better way other than trashing the app. I'm just afraid doing that will subtract 1 from my 5 macs I can install it on.

It won't. You just need to place it into the trash.

So I exported out an xml from Final Cut Pro 7, opened it in CATDV trial version and clicked on 'Send to Final Cut Pro X'. Alas my sequence opened up. Now a quarter of my clips didn't show up, but the one's that did show up are in the correct order. So I think if someone out there with some programming knowledge spent some time, they could make it work.

Nope, not really. The whole "trackless paradigm shift in editing" is what's really tripping up XFCP. If one only sits alone and never has to hand over a edit to somebody else it might sorta work but in the bigger world that concept simply don't work. Here's a long read that lays it out much better than I can:

That's a pretty major oversimplification of what's going on. And anyways I've personally tried the CatDV method to go from 7 to X- is it perfect, no. Does it give you a pathway that a developer savvy enough could make work well enough? Quite possibly.

Apple knows there's an App Store bug.
http://support.apple.com/kb/TS4057

XSAN support for this update in single user XSAN access, not shared. No where does "shared" get stated.

ProRes is the same for all versions of FCP, 7 and X, and X won't mess with 7 at all. It's installer moves all Final Cut Studio apps into a folder called "Final Cut Studio". The only issue is that you can't have two apps with the same name in the same folder level.

Media Stems / Roles is fantastic. Not just for exports, but also for media management in Timelines. Check it out in the Timeline List. I'm already doing my second major project with Roles, and am absolutely loving them. Have already taken dialog and SFX into Logic for original music compositions for the production, and it works like a charm. Finding specific elements in the Timeline is a breeze, and helps me group my audio and video assets quickly. Wish I had this feature in FCP 5.

Blackmagic has already told a few folks publicly that FCPXML is already being implemented and will be in a version of Resolve LITE very soon.

Apple has publicly stated they are working with just about every major vendor, they are all on board with FCPXML.

SDK for camera manufactures is just like the plugin architecture of legacy Log & Transfer, let them make the plugins for their proprietary codecs, rather than wait even longer for Apple to create them, and maybe miss something the manufacturers engineers already know about. Faster, more reliable, more responsible, proven.

Working in full-screen mode on dual monitors gives me more real estate than I could ever imagine. Pics posted on my FaceBook profile.
