View Full Version : Book recommendations for producing?

Any book recommendations for producing an independent film? I plan to produce an indie feature in 2-3 years (pre-production to begin in 1-2 years, principle photography in 2-3 years). I have books on directing, but as I can not find a forum section on dvxuser purely for production, I figure many directors are director-producers.

Great for business/legal.

Pretty good all-around introductory book.

Best I've read for financing.

Also well worth reading. Full of random tips regarding things the other books don't cover.

Great read, especially if you won't have the money for an experienced entertainment attorney.

A little outdated at times, but some advice is great. Worth reading. Skip the chapters about lighting, directing, writing, etc. Actually no, read them for the humor.

Good starting place for contracts. It gives samples and explains the language along the way.

Thank you Drew, added several (I own a few of the titles you mentioned) to my Amazon wish list to buy soon (as a book or for my new nook simple touch as an ebook)!

If I may make a suggestion as to how to approach it, because this is something you need to keep in mind from the earliest stages, don't think of the business side purely from the point of view as to how to get it financed. Give a lot of thought as to how you're going to get money coming back in once you've spent it, and that starts with deciding to make something which has a chance of it happening.

Most definitely, sound advice. :)
ps: Barry is there a discount code perchance for dvxuser members such as moi for your Lighting for Film and Television DVD set? Just thought I would ask. I already have the entire Digital Cinema Training DVD set (about a gazillion dvds) that teachers lighting, would be nice to pick up yours (I also have your Sound for Film and Television DVD).

Currently, there isn't one. Many have said it's worth more than its price, though.

I just picked up the 3DVD set (Lighting for Film and TV) on ebay used for $50 so I am the proverbial happy camper. Looking forward to viewing it.

Forgot a good one on DIY distribution: http://www.thinkoutsidetheboxoffice.com
Buying it there is better than Amazon because you get updates.
I have a few books on writing business plans for film, but I'm starting to think business plans aren't as useful today as they once were.

Ordered. I'm surprised I don't already own that, considering its high praise and my tendency to buy every book I see.

Be careful with Bankroll. While it has good ideas, many are illegal and can land you in trouble.
