DVXFest – Scare Fest – Official Rules
Make a scary movie that is 6 minutes (or less) and does not exceed a hard R rating (if you are unsure, ask first).
6 minutes and 1 second is a disqualification

You must use a DVXuser sanctioned leader as the first moving images in your film.
Leaders available at: www.dvxfest.com/leaders (http://www.dvxfest.com/leaders)
You only have to use the visuals (included audio not required)
The use of the leader does NOT count against your 6 minutes

You must use the following line of dialogue somewhere in your film: “Halloween Sucks”, or, "Don't go in there", or "I'm scared... really freaked out right now"
You must use original or licensed material in your film. Failure to do so will result in disqualification. DVXuser (or its partners) assumes no liability for copyright violations. We will make a good faith effort to identify any and all copyright violations in submitted entries.

Scare Fest Run Dates
Shooting dates start now. The dates to make your film are from August 20, 2011 to October 28, 2011. The deadline for uploads will be October 28th, 2011, at 4pm Pacific Standard Time.

Scare Fest Promotion
No more than 15 seconds of footage from your film is to be publicly displayed prior to the conclusion of the festival. (DVXuser may grant a waiver for live film festivals that premiere prior to the conclusion of DVXFest. You must make this request in writing prior to any public viewing.)
You may promote your film (and dvxfest in general) on, or outside of, DVXuser. Please do not register to websites simply to spam links to your fest entry. Utilize channels and communities you are already involved in. “Spammy” behavior will be grounds for disqualification.
*DVXuser reserves the right to alter or edit these rules until September 10th, 2011.
**DVXuser reserves the right to refuse entry for any reason.

I love the shortened rules. That should make a lot of people happy.

I'm not digging the required line of dialogue though. As a writer, I hate having to force a line into a story, especially when every story will have that same line. I'm imaging a lot of vampire stories.

What about an ECU on the eyes that are leering giving that line?! Eh? It'll be uber dramatic, then!

Maybe instead of changing the line, we could petition for a 'choice b' in lines. Maybe something that could more easily go in a serious piece

Here, too! We moved into our house October 15th almost 2 years ago. We bought 3 large "variety" type bags of candy to hand out. We were excited!

No one came.

Not. One.

I've attributed this to two reasons in my neighborhood... 1) fewer kids... most of the Daughter's peer group has grown up and gone, and the parents, like us, are still living in the neighborhood... kids don't move in next door to parents, or invade the parent's house with their own kids these days... and 2) the increasing number of 'Halloween themed' venues where 'kids are safe'... supposedly... but it seems people are paranoid about sending their kids around their own neighborhood even chaperoned...

I think I'll try to submit to this fest this round...

On a specific question on the 'rules'... the 15 seconds of footage rule, can that be combined into a 'trailer' or are trailers not allowed?

If I'm understanding what you are asking, yes... The intention is that you can put together a 15 second teaser/trailer for your film to use for promotional purposes for the fest in general and for your film.

Later,

I want to take a moment to look at something.

Make a scary movie that is 6 minutes (or less)

Now I dont want to sway anyone, but Im saying upfront make sure you make a scary movie. Scary is what it says ... scary.

Now IMO a scary movie is not a movie with one scary scene. Its a whole movie thats designed to scare. The end.

Zim

It is the Scare fest not the Scary fest. If it is a normal movie for 5:59 and the last second you get the crap scared out of you then that would work.

Now IMO a scary movie is not a movie with one scary scene. Its a whole movie thats designed to scare. The end.

Interesting topic. I think a real scary movie is often one where it earns the scare through character development. Often showing the mundane, or setting up normal life for the protagonist can have a more profound effect on the viewer when the scare comes. Especially in a short where there's more pressure to get into the scares quickly.

I recently watched a short online where it had scares constantly, it was well made, but by the end I was completely desensitized. I think I was guilty of that in my last short, too many popcorn jumps in the latter half when I should have been developing empathy for the character.

On the other extreme a film like '29 palms' was almost tedious to get though but the ending was so intense and unexpected that it stayed with me long after the film finished.

There's a balance for sure, but scares for me are best when they seem out of the ordinary, not when they are part of the ordinary. But we may be saying the same thing as a movie thats 'designed to scare' will for sure have the brooding atmosphere slowly ramped up, even if it isn't delivering a scare all the way through. At least, if I enter this time I'll be aiming for that approach rather than trying to fit 5 set pieces into 6 minutes. I'm totally guilty of that....

Can you elaborate on this? Drag Me To Hell is full of jump out scares. Like cats, loud noises, and all kinds of BS. Not my cup of tea.

As long as we get creepy throughout and then a good scare.... that's cool, right?

Quick question

This line:

"I'm scared... really freaked out right now"

Can this be divided over two characters?

As in:

Character 1
I'm scared.

Character 2
Really freaked out right now.

So long as it's back-to-back lines. Or is it required to be one line, one character.

Maybe you can get public domain footage of old presidents, clipping judiciously, to come up with the required words in 'back-to-back' sequences... maybe even add in some '666' type distortion...

Upload details will come closer to the deadline. But, we will post a link for you some time before the deadline. It will be an upload page. A place for you to enter your information as well as upload any files associated with your entry (your film, poster if you have one, etc). By uploading the film, you are "entered" in the festival.

It's called be creative everyone - why have to use a line if it naturally fits the genre? Where is the challenge in that?

I'm in!

An R rating in the US is different than it is here. I'm guess no pornographic scenes, No children (sex, torture or murder), No brutal rape, no below the belt close ups... (none of which I would use) Can violence go to far? Is playing not sexually with a "corpse" ok?

Jason Ramsey
09-20-2011, 11:45 AM
it's a pretty loose R in most situations. no penetration, hardcore, etc... that kind of stuff..

someone messing with a corpse would be fine in the context you put it. If you aren't sure, feel free to pm your exact question to one of us, and we'll be happy to give you a more definitive answer. Someone sodomizing a corpse (though nasty) could even potentially be acceptable... unless you turned it into a necro-porn... Definitely, if you are UNSURE, ASK FIRST.

full frontal... could be ok... best to ask first.

we are all creative types, and we try to give as much freedom within the legal realm as possible when it comes to the fests for people to express themselves. But, if we think you are just trying to be an asshole, or gratuitous for the sake of gratuity, or not making a genuine entry into the fest... and, you haven't communicated with us.... that's where you will likely start to run into problems.

And what are the rewards?

Jason Ramsey
09-20-2011, 12:14 PM
will announce later... but we have some regular donors to the fest that should be giving for this one as well... including (but not limited to) kessler crane, cpm film tools, dvestore... some others... check the previous fests prize lists for an idea... could be anywhere from 5k to 25k worth going off of past fests.

other than that... (cheese moment) the reward is engaging in the creative process with your peers from start to finish. getting feedback from your peers and an anonymous audience on your work. learning. teaching. Actually, getting up and making a film, rather than talking about cameras or making movies all of the time :)

You should ask Red to sponsor a few prizes. Obviously not a camera, that'd be too much, maybe a gift cert or something. Could inspire a bunch of people from Reduser to come on over and enter.

I'll ask the stupid question of the day: we upload our entry in the "scare room" sub forum, in an individual thread based on our entry? Do I get it right?
I might be interested to work on something, I'd just want to do it right. Thanks.

Jason Ramsey

Hey, drapeama...

Scare Room is where you start your individual film thread, that is correct. Closer to the deadline, there will be a new thread created that will have a link to the upload page that you will use to upload your film.

Later,
Jasn

Just to clarify. There is no cost for entering? Also, is there any date that i must commit by? Also, the line that must be used is any of the 3 from the first post (the pdf only says "Halloween Sucks".)

Thanks.

Jason Ramsey

Joe.

Yes. it is free to enter. no cost to you. the only date you need to know is the upload deadline. if you want to enter, just make sure you have your film in by the deadline, and you are entered. You don't have to formally announce or enter prior to that if you don't want to.

any of the 3 from the first post. that is correct. I forgot to update the pdf. thank you for reminding me.

Hey mods/admins- can the line of dialogue be written? For example, it appears as a text message, as an advertisement on a computer screen, or is otherwise visible on screen for a portion of time?

Must be spoken. Otherwise, it is not dialog :)

They are still accepting entries. This would be good for those films you aren't entering into any more fests or are maybe just sitting on YouTube.

MikeMcKay
10-11-2011, 11:57 AM
Yeah, but they're better off for extending it and I think they just want to give awayt their new Torch LED light. I got a reply back. I think people aren't reading the language posted on the site, a lot of legal.

Chris_Keaton
10-11-2011, 12:18 PM
Yeah, I questioned them about the 'never been published' bit and they said ignore it, its just legalese. I'm sure they are just looking for entries and they do want to show the films on their website.

I'll take any publicty I can get, lol. I think this whole part " The month of October is full of creeps, blood, guts and bumps in night. You have Halloween, haunted houses and an immeasurable amount of horror films. While some of these seasonal blessings are great, they only last as long as the candy corn and those delicious marshmallow pumpkins. Not horror films;horror films transcend through every season.
Independently made classics like Halloween and even more recent, and soon-to-be classics like Let the Right One in for example, have and will influence filmmakers, probably forever. This contest is more of a celebration of the genre and the filmmakers than anything, but all is not right in the world of "horrodom". The genre demands fresh blood to continue and you're the victim.
We want this contest to lampoon new and rising filmmakers in hopes of bringing the horror genre back from the dead (all puns intended) but we need your help."

Really sold me on doing it. Cause I agree. I grew up watching bad B movies and now that I watch these new horror films out now...I have to say I miss the way they were once made.

If they're into, I'm into it.

We've had subtitled entries before, so I don't see a problem, but a mod will be around sometime to answer that for sure.

What's the 1st rule of DVXfest? ; )

Download -> 38791 <- Download

How exactly do we upload our videos for the contest? Do we just upload them on Vimeo and embed it in a new thread in the "Scare Room"?
