Found this on CreativeCow.

http://www.eleventy.org/dv-en/

Interesting that he compared DVCPRO25/PAL with DV/PAL, because the difference is 4:1:1 vs. 4:2:0. Then he shows DVCPRO50, with lower compression and 4:2:2.

A very simple test, simple and to the point. Also explains why some of us are "amp'd" that Panasonic included DVCPRO50 in the new HVX!

I especially like that he laid out his methodology and gave us the source picture at full resolution as well.

Bring on the HVX right now! Panasonic are absolute geniouses! Amazing that I can get just as excited about DVCPro50 as with the HD! I am going to be one spoiled film maker! Good link Barry! Peace.

Thanks Barry. That was interesting. I'm sure codec implementation has something to do with it, but I was VERY interested to see how much better the DVCPro stuff was compared to normal DV/and DVCPro25...Night and Day.

Thanks Barry, I love straight forward tests like this.

Hey Barry, I'm glad you brought that test over here, I should have thought of that!

If there is anyone here who can handle DVCProHD on their system, it would be great to be able to add that to the mix as well. The original poster is using AVID Xpress Pro, so he can't render out HD.

Anyone interested?
I think it would be great to see all possible HVX formats side by side like that.

The reality is that not all projects have to be shot on HD. Like if I'm going out to get some skating or snowboarding then I will more than likely shoot on DV50 because I could get more out of the P2 cards and with less compression and more color sampling. Any of my short films or features would be shot on HD. I've heard good things about DV50 and this just shows that they are true. I can't wait for this freakin camera.

Drew,

I agree with you completely, and I'm actually looking forward to the DVCPro50 more so than the HD options. I just figured it would be interesting to see the comparissons of all the possible shooting formats, especially given the lower compression when compared to DVCProHD.

As I mentioned elsewhere, what I'd really like to see is DVCPro50 uprezzed to HD, side by side with DVCProHD samples. I'm just curious, that's all.

Same here, I was sold on the 4:2:2 alone. Thanks for the excellent link, Barry.

I would really like to play with the DVCPro50 format and see what it could do. I hate what DV25 does when you get it near anything that's red. Damn that stair-stepping. I have heard from people that have seen the SDX-900 footage that it looks like HD. But of course I don't know how much HD material these people had seen before. So I guess take it for what its worth.
