View Full Version : Hard Drive instead of P2?

I have heard that an ipod was tested with the HVX to record on and it worked. I'm also wondering how they hooked it up. So, why P2 then if I could just use an ipod which I already have to hook it up to the HVX instead of spending 1000's of dollars. Would this be a good idea?

I know this topic has been brought up before i am just trying to clarify this.

To make it clear the Ipod was tried with DVCPROHD data stored and then played from the Ipod probably connected to a mac OSX laptop.

HVX did not record directly to Ipod. HVX is still a markup made of wood as far as we know at this point.

Only a storage device at this point, it would be nice if someone can write a piece of software that turn the Ipod into a DVR but that is still a dream.

Yes, you can use the Ipod as a portable drive and yes it is fast enough for DVCPROHD.

This question may have been answered, I looked around.

If you hook a drive (or ipod) to the camera to transfer scene files off, is it realtime or is it faster just like a file transfer?

Cheers,
Chris

I hope we can go straight to harddrive. If Juan and Reelstream can mod a dvx to do it, hopefully Panasonic will be able to give us direct to disk recording.

I really hope we can go straight to HD too...

Will a Firestore device work? That would provide 80GB of storage for about $1k, and I'm sure by the time the HVX launches the capacity will probably have grown. This could be a viable option in the field.

..I THINK BARRY Greens suggested firstore type solution is the best.. to have the firestore simply be the controller.. and possibly power scource for a HDD alone.. so that the firestore itself does not have a drive in it. but instead you simply attacah any off the shelf 1394 or usb2.0 drive to the firestrore controller. so yod connect the firestore to the camera.. and then connect any external drive to the firestore.. that way you could still give the drive away at the end of the shoot, and also youd have virtually unlimited HDD storage. cause when one drive was full you could just plug another in. i really dont see any reason why they couldnt do it like that .. it should also lower the cost of the firestor a little cause they wouldnt have to build a HDD into it. the firestore should just be a external HDD controller, and power supply. so the signal comes in, and the firestore makes sense of it and writes to whatever external HDD youve got attached to it. .. that really makes the most sense

as Barry suggested you should write the makers of the fiorestore and other DTD (direct to disk ) controllers and request that they make the product function like this.

yeah, I like that kind of workflow if simply dumping the content of the full p2 cards onto a USB2 mobile HDD does not cover the requirements of a project.

Very good idea which brings me back to one of the very old questions: can such an interface not be built into a cardbus card? can somebody enlighten me on that subject, please? Jan?

..i would think it could, but again your faced with the issue of powering the HDD. .. and that leaves the question of whether theres adaquate power through the P2 slot and how much battery drain of the cam would depend the HDD of course. but if you could run external power from another scource as well ....

Well, now we are getting to something I think is a reasonable request from Panasonic; an external power jack. :)

It can be as fast as the cable allows, so for USB2, it could be up to 480mbps, which would be anywhere from 5x to 12x realtime (depending on what mode you shot in; 5x realtime for 1080, 12x realtime for 720/24p). But it also depends on how fast the receiving device is. The camera and the USB2 cable and the P2 card can all pump data at 480mbps, but can your drive record that fast? For sure an ipod wouldn't. It might be 2x realtime to copy to an ipod, depending on how fast the ipod is (I don't really know). If the ipod can sustain 13mbps data write speed, then it could be realtime. The faster the receiving device is, the faster you can transfer, up to the limits of the cable (480mbps for USB2) or the card (640mbps for P2).

I just saw Firestore has a sale..a F-4 field kit for $849. Thats for 40GB. With something like that there is no reason I can see to even get a P2 card. If everything works out and I get a HVX200 I will go that route.

Even with a tape only camera it would be better.
