Looks like the Viper Filmstream camera, which previously had to be chained to a hard disk array to record, is now getting a solid-state magazine. Kind of funny, everyone on the HVX board is clamoring for hard disk options, and here the Viper guys, who've always had hard disk, are now introducing solid state (roughly akin to P2 style recording!)

Runtimes look similar too -- the magazine can record 10 minutes of uncompressed, or using the 4:2:2 mode you can extend that to 18 minutes. Not too unlike an 8gb P2 card, which stores 8 minutes of 1080, or 20 minutes of 720/24p.

(obviously there's a WORLD of difference between uncompressed on a Viper, and DVCPRO-HD off a 1/3" CCD HVX -- we're not talking about that, we're just talking about similarity of workflow).

Of course, people think the $2,000 P2 card is expensive -- the Viper solid-state magazine lists for $59,000. But then again, it's a Viper... :)

Why is it anything with the label "Viper" very expensive?

Barry,10 minutes recodirng time for the Viper stream, but we are talking about uncompressed full 4:4:4 RGB 10bit. Notcomopressed DVCPRO-HD 8 bit. It's a much fatter stream. I'm sure the Viper card could record many times this amount in DVCPRO-HD
Besides comparing the Viper with DVCPRO-HD or P2 is like comparing the Waldorf Astoria to my house. They don't even exist in the same world:)
Not even the CineAlta is in the same league as the Viper. I mean, it's pretty pointless to even write P2 or HVX and Thompson Viper in the same sentence.

But I dig what you are saying. Solid media is way better than HDD. I think most know that already. We only want HDD now because P2 prices are not realistic at this point in time. But as soon as P2 drops, I think it's a no brainer. P2 will be the way to go and people will follow. It's just not yet.

DV=$.004K
DVCProHD=$2k
Viper=$59K

I think that makes sense given the quality differences between the systems, oh yes I do.

I don't think Berry was really comparing apple for apple, but he's got a point they are both Solid-State and similar in technology.

Viper is at the highend of course.

Put your thinking cap on people.

P2 is just the start of this revolution.

Sony won't give it to us but Pani will so give them some credits people.

I agree. Let's some the bashing and figure out how to make this work for everyone.
