Here's how we can make things simple, except for the folks that get their jollies arguing and pushing buttons.
I would like to think that a camera is really only comparable to a similar priced 1/3” CCD cameras. So in this round we have the Z1, the HD100, and the HVX. Comparing any of these to higher priced, 2/3” cameras is ridiculous. If these little deals provide a picture that’s close or on par, then it’s worth noting how lucky we are to have them. In my opinion, the HVX is in between the Z1 and HD100 in the resolution and frame rate department, as in it does everything both of these other cameras can do and more. On top of that it uses a capturing technology that in spec is superior to them both. The drawback is that there is much more data to be stored than HDV. So Panasonic took a shot in the dark and created P2 which all things considered is far less expensive than tape in hardware requirements, maintenance, and stock over the course of time. I’ll bet the picture quality of any of these will be acceptable to most anyone. However some who may use more post will benefit from a lower compression format. With that you usually have to pay a little more.
It’s true that you do need to spend more than the projected $6,000 to walk out of the store with the ability to capture high def. But you are getting a professional, widely used in production currently format for much less than possible before. True it doesn’t have a removable lens, but neither does the Z1.
Bottom line, it IS an incredible offering for us independents, it doesn’t have all the features of Varicam or Cinealta, but it has quite a few Varicam similarities, and for a crapload less. If there’s any one particular feature or characteristic that doesn’t suit you, don’t buy it, and stop trolling forums to discredit something that isn’t fully finished.
This camera is directed toward a specific demographic, as the Z1 and HD100 is. The Z1 was more than adequate for some and that’s why they ate it up. Those here that are excited about the HVX obviously are in that demographic…and if you’re trolling, you obviously are in one of the other demographics. Move along, or hang out and learn.
