It seems that almost everyone has been talking about 1080i and very little about 720p.

From my understanding, if you shoot HD at 720p, your 8gb P2 card will give you approximately 20 minutes versus 8 minutes at 1080i.

How much of a difference in quality would there be if you shoot 720p versus 1080i? On paper, you would think that 720p would work out to 1440i. Could someone please explain in simplistic terms what the difference would be with regard to final quality if you planned to take it out to Studio Pro 4 when they release the new G5 HD burner?

Depends on your frame rate. If you shoot 720/60p, you'll get the same record time as you would get at 1080 (at any of its frame rates).

So you get the longer record times in 720 when you use a slower frame rate; 720/24p would give you the 20 minute record times.

The difference between 720p and 1080i is going to be the difference between progressive and interlaced. On network broadcasts, 1080i and 720/60p look about the same.

But if you're talking about for 24p shooting -- 1080/24p is going to have about twice as many pixels per frame as 720/24p.

But -- then again, we won't truly know until the camera's done and we can see the footage.
