The rumor out there is that once OS X Lion comes out we will see brand new Thunderbolt Mac Pro's, and Thunder Bolt devices even one made by apple.

Could it be that Apple, AJA, and BlackMagic, are working on new Thunderbolt devices to handle i/o in FCP X? The big rumor was that a device for pro users was coming out around the launch of Lion or FCP X.

Of coure do we really need Mac Pros once thunderbolt takes off? You coul even have external video cards on a imac with thunderbolt.

Thoughts?

Can we just add a Thunderbolt card on a Mac Pro?

Even though it works of the same tech as PCI-E intel has said no way.

I suspect that AJA is already working on something, too.

From what I've heard, no. It has to be on the motherboard, for some reason.

Yes and no. Apple says no because Thunderbolt is faster than the PCIe 16 lane. The rummor is Sonnet is going to make one anyway. If both are true this means the Sonnet card will have a limited bandwidth and not meet the true Thunderbolt specs.

Not exactly on topic, but why do I have an odd feeling that Thunderbolt will go the way of FireWire? I mean, FW is dying. I'm not saying that Thunderbolt is not great technology, but that's not the deciding factor - cost is; after all, look what happened with FW and the technology was arguably always superior to USB. But yet, USB is still around, while what happened with FW? Wide adoption of FW stopped with FW800, meanwhile, USB is chugging along with USB 3.0. Who says that down the road, it won't be the same, and Apple will abandon Thunderbolt when the world doesn't come along, and give in to USB 3.0? Speculation, I know, but from what I understand TB is way expensive compared to USB 3.0, and history may be repeating itself. I guess we can enjoy TB while it lasts. Thoughts?

great observation except the functionality of TB is more wide reaching that USB or FW from what ive been able to gather so far. what you say though makes some sense to me just the same.

TB is Intel too btw, NOT just Apple. But to be fair, I think TB will not be largely used like USB2/3/4 is. It will replace FireWire and compete with other (fiber) solutions as a high-end but affordable high-speed connection. If intel finally starts to push TB on its PC motherboard specs, we'll see this tech everywhere in professional hardware (video/audio/graphics/etc).

Thoughts?

As XFCP lacks Log&Transfer or any live output of a YUV video stream whatsoever for broadcast monitoring ... Thunderbolt is nothing to XFCP.

The Blackmagic Design Ultrastudio 3D (http://www.blackmagic-design.com/products/ultrastudio3d/) external video capture/output Thunderbolt device does work with Premiere Pro though and, oddly enough, with FCP Classic.

XFCP can however capture DV over Firewire. Go figure.

I heard Matrox is releasing a thunderbolt adapter to upgrade the current MX02 box.

Errm... Simon, that's not XFCP shown in the video. It's Blackmagic Design's own colour corrector DaVinci Resolve (http://www.blackmagic-design.com/products/davinciresolve/software/).
