What's in your iPod / CD changer? We've had a punk debate going for a couple of days now, and it got me wondering what everyone listens to! So, what is on your heavy rotation? What new, old, hard-to-find or simply underrated music should we know about?
Just by chance, today, in my 6-disc car changer:
Billie Holiday (Columbia Compilation) Disc 2
Green Day International Superhits
Radiohead OK Computer
The Smiths Singles
Beastie Boys Pauls Boutique
Vandals Peace Through Vandalism - When in...

I *did* see Elvis Costello when he came through Charlotte last month. General admission; I was 8 feet from the microphone.
No light shows. No spectacle. No huge band. Just Elvis and three other guys. A show about the music, nothing else.
One of the best shows I've ever seen.

John,
I was about to say the same thing - and I have to agree with David on the Costello comments... that guy has incredible talent. Just bought my U2 tix this ayem for the December show at the Bobcat Arena. Hope it's good, as I haven't seen U2 since Zoo Tour with Public Enemy at Dodger Stadium.
For old guys like me, what's happening somewhere in between pop-punk like Green Day and the likes of Killswitch & The Used. It's been three, no! four long years since I worked the Warped Tour...

Wow, John, good picks. X was the greatest unknown American band ever. I got some great stills of Exene and John Doe live from around 1980. The Bunnymen were a favorite too, along with the Furs, Romeo Void, Dead Kennedys, and another favorite from then, Bush Tetras. I wish I had the time to do music like I did back then. Kids, and running a business has cut down on the time, and maybe the passion a little. I saw U2 in 1980 touring the October album. The place was only half full, Bono was like 19, and it was in an old mideavel type church. Pretty hot. Another hot act back then was the Pretenders. Their first album was so great. I got to see them BEFORE the guitar player and bass player OD. Thanks for the reminder, I think I'll crank up some X right now. :)

Ya they were awesome. Death of a nation did suck! Now their on the same record label as christina agulara. They say the reason they got into music was so there message can be heard and it was being heard just fine.
No more $6 anti-flag shows... :(
I fully support them getting they're message out there. But the fact that they sound like a band that RCA would want on they're label is what disturbs me. The message didn't change, which is cool; but the music did, and the music used to be awesome.
Same thing with AFI, when they went to Dreamworks. Just the music changed, unfortunately not for the better.

Untrue, AFI started to get big with The Art of Drowning, they were too popular for Nitro to handle, so they took off for Dreamworks. I didn't say that they were poppy, just that they changed they're music, and that's why they're on the new label. Sing the Sorrow was pretty good, but nowhere NEAR as good as they're old stuff. (opinion!)
I love Rise Against, been listening to them since The Unraveling first came out. It's getting a bit more pop/ emo, and less hardcore; but I stil dig all they're stuff.

From what most of you are listening to it seems reason to believe that you would be into:
The Mars Volta
Not just the one song they play one the radio now, but find their first album "deloused in the comatorium." I know you won't be disappointed, they're great. I've also been listing to a bunch of Minus the Bear and +/-. But The Mars Volta has made me love music again.

Yeah, Mars Volta is great, my buddy really got me into them. That's such a great album, start to finish.

I'll still have to disagree. There were very few if any at all radio plays or tv spots for AFI before "Sing the Sorrow". This is what I'm basing their popularity on.....national exposure. Before the major label release they had limited exposure. That fact cannot be disputed. Just because you're out on Warped Tour every year doesn't make you popular.

True, but they were well on their way to that popularity when they left, I was at they're last show while on Nitro; and it was a VERY different crowd than those from earlier shows I had been to.
Of course, I'm in the Bay Area, so they're probably more popular and got more play here (from AOD) due to the local scene. So perhaps my perceptions are skewed.
They've actually said that they were unhappy with STS, because the label had to much say in the way it sounded. They said they want to digress back to the days of Black Sails, which I personally think would be awesome. It reminds me of the new Mustangs, reliving the glory days.

IMO sing the sorrow sucked.
I agree, besides the songs "Death of Seasons" and maybe "...but Home is Nowhere" I couldn't stand any of it. All of their old stuff was waay better, they ditched their perfect blend of dark punk hardcore for this poppy Sing the Sorrow.

If you want to be in the mainstream and you want to actually *MAKE* money in the music industry, you will do whatever it takes. Even if it means pissing off fans or changing your style to accomodate a wider audience. I've been in this crazy biz for about 7 years.....same things happen all the time.
Don't get me wrong, AFI are still cool, but it disappoints you to see so many bands being molded by their Label and producer. Bummer!!
I just try to keep my ears to the street and get into bands before they become *ROCK STARS*....they are usually much more approachable and have a better sound before they goto major labels.

Happy day today, I found my new favourite Dead Kennedys song. Pull My Strings off of Give Me Convienience or Give Me Death. Funny thing is, I actually like the music they are playing to take the piss out of. Well, I mean the one that isn't My Sharona, I think that's the only song they play that isn't an original in the song.
Anyway, good song. I've also been listening to a couple of my brother's Coheed & Cambria songs, which I don't know why because I'm not a fan of emo music, generally. The film clips of theirs that I've seen are all well made. Although the clip for Blood Red Summer was shot on film and I think it resembles some of the stuff I've seen of Rich Lee's, which makes me think that he could have shot the clip on the DVX and it would have looked just as good as film.

Haven't actually heard that one, I'll have to check it out.
The entire album "In God We Trust, Inc." is amazingly awesome. I wouldn't be able to pick a favourite from it, well, maybe Religious Vomit or Dog Bite

Hehe, actually I have heard Riot, cos I have Plastic Surgery Disasters, I just can't remember it.
Yeah, didn't the other guys in the band get pissed off at Jello cos he wouldn't let Levis use Holiday in Cambodia in a commerical or something? I'm pretty sure I read that somewhere and it annoyed me that Jello seemed to be the only one with actual principles.

Yeah, I've heard one song of theirs, Jesus was a Communist. I really liked it. Christ on Parade are a cool band that you'd probably like.
Haha, I like the fact it seems like I have nothing but anti-Christian music! :) In God We Trust, Inc; Jesus was a Communist; Christ on Parade.
Just to show that that's not the case, have you heard of Richard Cheese, and have you heard his cover of Holiday in Cambodia, it's cool. If you don't know, he does lounge covers of well known songs, I think songs from the 80s onwards.

ya alot of music I listen to is anti-christian too. Its not that i don't believe in god its just I'm not sure. Another good anti-christian song is Atheist anthem by Leftover Crack.
Jesus was a communist is my least favorite song by them. USA is their best song.
Have you guys picked up any of Jello's spoken word albums? They're really good; especially Become the Media.

Cool, I'll have to check out Atheist Anthem. Some other anti-Christian songs are Jesus Saves by Slayer and also in a totally different genre, Dear God by XTC.
TC, haven't actually heard any spoken word Jello, I might have to track some down. Have you heard any of the stuff he did with D.O.A.? Combining two of my favourite 80s punk bands, how can you go wrong?

I've been listening to a lot of Mozart recently. We're using several Mozart pieces to score our film so I've been revisiting them now to try and decide between a few different alternate performances if we do not get our first choice.
[EDIT]As for right now, I am listening to The Platform by Dilated Peoples.
