Saw the boys last night in Charlotte - an amazing set opened by My Chemical Romance. Anyone else go?

Yes, I saw them the night before you did here in Jax. I loved MCR! Wished they had played a longer set! Green Day was fantastic live, great great voice that guy has!!!!

The mosh pits were fun to watch, too!!!!!!

Incidentally, MCR is appearing in the Vans Warped Tour line-up. They will be here in my area again in August for that, and we will definitely be going.

people actually mosh to green day?

Erik Olson
04-21-2005, 11:53 AM
Yeah, but it's a very sold out, commercial kind of moshing. What exactly are you getting at?

I've heard a lot of shit about Green Day recently, even though they're one of - if not the only one - mainstream acts not afraid to alienate half the population in the USA for their convictions. While others backpedal, Billy Joe, Dirnt and the rest promplty give their critics the finger.

They've also put on a consistently great show for about sixteen years now. Being from the Bay Area, I might be a little more sensitive... but would you mosh to The Clash or Ramones - or are we having a punk versus pop conversation? Green Day embodies the spirit of dissention and edge in every way - even if their lyrics and melodies have become more polished and tight, the underlying spirit of the act is pure punk.

ya thats true. You gotta admit though their new stuff isn't half as good as their original stuff... like dookie.

sex pistols, reagan youth, bad brains, and the ramones all brought something to punk that no other band has./

Don't forget Agent Orange (ANAHEIM!!!) or PIL or the DKs or Tendencies for that matter. On the subject of Green Day, most of the strict-punk-aesthetic-interpretists call Dookie the album that ruined their street credibility. To hell with them.

I celebrate the band's entire collection. For my money, it doesn't get any better than when they sing "4-09 in Your Coffemaker".

I think their new stuff is way better than their older stuff; they have really grown as artists although I loved Dookie. First time I heard Longview I freaked out; that song was a refreshing blast of punk sounding rock and lyrics into a Grunge dominated market.

We can go on and on about what bands brought what into the Punk Culture and that's a long list; much longer than the 4 you mentioned and there are bands today still carrying the torch; Green Day for example. Don't confuse popularity conflicting with the Punk mindset. When I listened to Punk; NO ONE did (That's a general term). The Ramones were about as mainstream as Punk got and that being that thier music was just so listenable; but bands like The Dead Kennedy's, T.S.O.L and X barely got any attention and brought so much to the scene and history of punk music.

Punk isn't always about the music; it's a state of mind, culture and belief.

I still have a little Punk left in me; even being all grown up married with child. Punk is a state of mind. One thing I never liked? Skinhead Punks; violence and fascism I cannot support (although I suppose it has it's time and place for the right causes; we won't go there).

I'm with Overland; moshing at Green Day; yeah.....and?

They used to play at a pizza joint here years ago. I think one of them married someone from this area, though that may just be local rumor.

EDIT: This was written by Billie Joe's wife...

"Billie Joe and I met on the very first Green Day tour when Al Sobrante was in the band. I was one of only ten people at a Green Day gig and me and Billie ended up hitting it off. So, I moved out to California in the heat of Dookie. Thats when we got married, a month later. I had been working in the this small town in Minnesota called Mankato as a manager for Pier 1 imports. I had graduated with a degree in sociology from Mankato State University and stayed there till Billie Joe finally convinced me to move out to Cali. I work now, occasionally, at Cinder Block Printing. They do music merch. for band like Screeching Weasel, OP IVY, Mr. T -Experience, first GD shirts for kerplunk, tons of other great bands. But mostly Joey's & Jakob are my full time job."

It's a small world.

ya i completely forgot about dead kennedys

The skinheads around here are the ones who organize all the shows. So bands like leftover crack who constantly sing about how much they hate skns play with american cockney boys who ARE skins.

Last show cops surrounded the whole place cuz skins decided to trash leftover cracks van and light it on fire. the punk scene in south florida is ruined becuz of these guys.

Horse, You're lucky you got to meet a cool famous person. The only ones i ever ran into were sum 41 and vanilla ice

What's funny is, at the time, they were just another band. It wasn't some special event (obviously, they were playing a pizza joint).

Aw man, I was just listening to Give me Convenience of Give me Death by DK. Awesome.

I'm suprised nobody mentioned The Misfits. Come on! Punk rock inspired by old B movies! Well not anymore, but they used to be!

Let's start the "Sex Pistols vs. The Velvet Underground: Who started punk rock" debate. (Joking)

That's easy TC The Velvet Underground.

Funny to think; The Sex Pistols ironically were 'Produced'. Almost 'Created and Molded'. Now that is dichotomy.

I disliked Green Day until I heard the old (I think it's 1989/1990 with a recent rerelease) "1039 Smoothed Out Slappy Hours" record. That's a great album, "Going to Pasalacqua", "She" great songs. I got out of the whole mindset that they were just the kings of this decade old "power pop punk" stuff and gained a new respect for them.

Kraut, DKs, Ramones, Pistols, Misfits, "old" Green Day, etc etc, I still blow out car speakers with that stuff

I kind of fell asleep during the new Green Day album, but some of the songs are pretty good, like Holiday.

I have like over 3000 punk and emo songs on my ipod, it's inseparable to me.

But yeah, it's all about rancid, misfits, black flag, anti-flag, operation ivy, minor threat, bad religion, adolescents, exploited, pennywise, propagandhi, dead kennedys, AFI (before Sing the Sorrow), TSOL, the virus, flogging molly, the distillers, and a lot more.

With my more indie punk side, the Blood Brothers are the best thing that has come to modern music since ever. And then Alkaline Trio, the second best.

I don't know if you noticed or not, but The Clash could be shortened to TC.

Green Day always seemed like posers to me, especially in their pretending-to-be-from-England-because-they-think-it-has-more-punk-cred days.

I have no doubt that if the breakout single from “Dookie” didn’t have the word “masturbation” in it (you do remember everyone yelling out that line whenever it was played, right?), it would have gotten nowhere.

No offense to anyone; I just don’t see it.

For me; the song Longview was cool because of the NON GRUNGE sound; don't get me wrong; I love Nirvana, Pearl Jam (Well, the album Ten only), Alice, Soundgarden, Mudhoney....

But when I first heard the appregio bass lines of Longview and then it busts into the bar chord manicness of the chorus I was just diggin it. I wish they did more songs like that as admittedly, some of their more popular songsa did sound; well popular.

LOL

You've obviously never been to that part of Oakland - Billy's accent is so totally East Bay.

Hey Overland,

I caught the tail-end of this thread but....I didn't know you were from Charlotte (I should have read under your name...!). Cool!! I didn't make it to the Green Day show, but I film ALOT of shows around the region. I frequent Tremont Music Hall the most, but we try to get all the major shows covered at the big venues, arenas, and stadiums as well. But we are sort of the *unofficial* house photographers at Tremont. Let me know if you ever want to meet a band or film a show....I'll help you get setup for it.

We mostly film and photograph the shows on regular old *DV* cams....nothing fancy. Before the shows, we do a small interview and photo session. We are not exactly *Rolling Stone* or anything....but we still have a lot of fun!! But you are welcome to hook up with us anytime. Our next *MAJOR* shows will be the Van's Warped Tour and OZZfest. We'll do another 10-15 "smaller" shows in the meantime at local clubs though.

One of the last shows we did was for *Hopesfall*.....a local Charlotte band (www.hopesfall.com). Coincidentally, the video for their single *Icarus* was made by Vendetta films (www.vendettafilms.com) and I believe it was shot on DVX if I'm not mistaken!?!

So anyway....maybe we'll see you around at a show sometime. l8r!!

~reservoir~

Oh yeah....My CHEM....kicks ass!! We saw them at Tremont a few months ago with Story of the Year. Great Show!!

Reservoir,

Lemme know if you ever need another shooter in the SE - I did two Warped shows in SF before moving out here. Seems like DVX - to now - have been the preferred cameras on that gig.

Cheers,

e
