WOW! I just ran across the single coolest thing I have heard since the info release on the HVX. It's an OPEN SOURCE software package that when complete will include full fledged and integrated media management, editing, compositing, effects, animation (2D and 3D), paint (2D and 3D) and more all in almost any format and at any bit depth! Here's a feature list broken down various "modules":

When this gets more complete I'm dumping Adobe that's for sure!

The Desktop
The Desktop is the main, unifying module and also acts as a asset management system

These are the Main Processing modules, and are used for all content creation

The Effects Module
The Effects module does all image processing, as well as real time color correction

The Animation Module
The Animation module is a high powered 3d compositor and animator

The Editing Module
The Editing module is a full fledged editing application

The Paint Module
The Paint module is a 2d/3d paint environment with support for full 3d brushes

The Text Module
The Text module is a full blown Character Generator

These are the Auxillary modules that can be accesed from within other modules

The Player Module
The Player lets you view or scrub clips, and its caching technology will let you playback uncompressed video in real time!

The Compositor Module
The Compositor allows for quick 2-layer comps

The Network Module
The Network module allows for public and private file sharing

"Not possible? It will be soon, and thanks to the power of open-source you can even teach it how to make coffee for you in the morning (no joke). "

Oh good, just what I needed from my NLE.

Hmm, the interface looks similar to Combustion. Btw - Combustion v4 just came out. But, the real big news is that the Flint and Smoke HD systems are now available on PCs:

Oh, I forgot about the new product Toxik.

Cool.

Ah, but these are at the other end of the spectrum from open source.

HAH. The only thing farther on that spectrum being proprietary?

HAH. The only thing farther on that spectrum being proprietary? Here we go... I predict that a fierce discussion on the merits of open source :undecided vs. :undecided commercial software will follow.

Personally, I think open source is great. That is: If you are a geek or another developer (isn't that one and the same?). I love browsing through other people's code, learn from their mistakes, from their design ideas, ... But when it comes to video/photography stuff, I want a working, stable product with technical support, a vast user base where I can go for tips and tricks (GO VEGAS!), and productivity right out of the box.

Not discounting this particular package, but my experience with open source has not been that positive... you get what you pay for.

I hear you XCheck. I want a stable platform as well. Open source projects usually release a stable version which others then hack. These projects usually have a development map for a fully functional stable release. Then of course others change that release, create add ons, create a new dev map but the stable release should, well, be stable. It's not going to replace After Effects or anything for me but it may very well replace Premiere Pro (unless something drastic changes).

Hans: I think that was an intentional design feature ;). I'm still looking but it seems that there will be the option to change skins. Should provide for some interesting looks. Flint and Smoke are now available on PC? That's great!

open source is great for third party software for production office productivity.
as for as high power applications, please... at least we have a long way to go with it.

Wow. I tried Jahshaka about 1-2 years ago and wasn't too impressed. Looks like I'll give it another go.

I remember my first 3D animation class in Alias PowerAnimator 6.0 back in 97'... the first day they explained overall what 3D is... Modeling, texturing, animation, compositing, rendering, dynamics etc... and I said "Isn't there a software that just does everything?"

I can't remember how many people laughed at that question as I was just a kid out of highschool, and these were working professionals who were using SoftImage switching to Alias.

This looks like the start of a step foward in that direction.

I completely agree. I love the sense of community that you get when something is open source, ie Linux, the BSD's, etc. I didn't mean for my post to promote venture capitalists monopolizing video editing suites.

I don't know how other commercial products compare in customer service, but Apple only
provides 90 days of complimentary phone support for Pro Apps. After 90 days, it costs $59/incident or a yearly contract for about $1200. It's certainly far from complimentary after those first few months.
