Hey guys and gals!

Tomorrow a buddy of mine (DP for this shoot) asked me if I could tag along and offload a shoot he's doing on a Panasonic HMC150, as well as transcode it to prores422 so it can be sent off to the editor that night.

It's only going to be about 3-4 hours of footage.

I have a couple of questions.

I know the codec for this camera is AVCHD, does it automatically shoot at 24P? meaning when I go to transcode it can I simply drop it in my FCP compressor droplet which I have setup for prores422P? that will keep the FPS at 24.987 correct and give me an "uncompressed" video file that can be imported into FCP?

Should I NOT use compressor and simply go with MPEG Streamclip and set it up to transcode that AVCHD video file to prores 422 at 100% quality and 24.987FPS?

With the DP being a good friend I'm not worried to ask him questions, but I'd like to show up and "rock n' roll" right off the bat if that makes any sense :)

any help would be greatly appreciated. thanks!

Do you have a card with a HMC150 file on it?
Couldn't you just use your droplet and see what happens?
I just drop my footage into FCP Log and Transfer, set the transfer preferences to prores422 and let FCP do the transfer to the hard disc file.
Seems like no better way to calm your first time jitters, then just rehearsing a transcode... I know this isn't technical but I hope it helps.

Thanks, unfortunately I do not any have HMC150 footage currently.. but I feel like it shouldn't be any different than transcoding H.264 files

Couldn't you ask your DP friend for a file? I'm sure someone in this forum would put a little AVCHD file up on a server for you if you ask.
Maybe Barry will read this and give you the real deal.

You set the frame rate in the camera settings. When you transcode the footage, it will keep the same frame rate. You can, of course, conform it to a different frame rate, but if you want 24p then set the camera to capture that from the start.

Thank you.. I'm familiar with running some footage through cinema tools to change the frame rate but if I just have to keep it at what it's shot as then all I have to worry about is the Codec, which will be nice. That way I can just drop it on the prores422 droplet and be done with it :) thank you!

That would be really cool. I'm working on the job tomorrow so no time to meet up with him unfortunately.
