Has anyone heard about the HVX's ability in low light conditions? The dvx wasn't the best in those aspects, I'm just curious if there have been any advances in that field.

I don't think we'll know this until the the CCD's Pixel counts are announced. Then I guess we'd have to have a prototype test with....right ?

Jan's already faulted the Z1 for it's low-light performance. So, we can expect better than the Z1, but beyond that....? A fatter codec is going to have a wider dynamic range, so Panny may be able to make up some lost ground against the small CCD size. Did you notice they're pitching the HVX200 as an ENG camera? It's got the "news gamma" setting. So it can't be a total dog in low light if they expect news organizations to adopt the cam.

Man, I need to unregister from this board, I'm getting too excited, and not getting enough work done.
Needless to say, if God made movies, he'd use the HVX. :)

Funny. I got a little *talking to* today from the boss for spending too much time online. How many others are getting in trouble for loitering on this site all day long?

I get trouble also, but from my wife, but I told her she not my boss,I regretted that because I had to do 25 push-ups. But yes these days I think 2 hours quality time news gatherin on HVX-200.

What is up with this?
The dvx100 has a superb sensitivity without gain! Don't believe everything you see on camcorderinfo...

It's the *Leo* in me. I live for danger!!
Actually, I do need to keep this job at least until the HVX comes out. LOL!!

I thought more pixels would mean more noise. Of course the manufacturers have been able to reduce the noise more every year and thus being able to create just as good cameras or camcorders with more pixels.
However, the resolution from SD to HD is such a great leap that I really donīt expect the HD machines to produce as little noise as the SDīs, unless they will sacrifice details in the image as well.
Just my 2 cents.

Regarding the CCDs, tonight Jan made it clear that they're very aware that there's more than raw pixel count that goes into making the image, and they're highly focused on getting the best sensitivity, dynamic range, and resolution that they can. I don't know exactly what that means for the mathematics, but I sure like how it sounds!

Is the low light capability comparable to the DVX100, worst or better?

Nobody knows yet. It may depend on what mode it's in (HD or SD), possibly dependent on how the camera samples off the CCD. I would expect that in HD mode, sensitivity will be lower (just like the Z1 is two full f-stops slower than the PD170) but what we don't know is how the noise performance will be: the HD100 is very noisy under gain, the Z1 is comparatively quite clean under gain.
So it's all speculation, we don't know anything factual like that yet.

Barry, you should just start answering simply "yes it will" to every question people ask. I wonder how often people actually read through the thread before asking. From now on, when people ask this questions about the HVX, while no one has seen it, I will say, "Yes, it will do that" :)
Will the HVX shoot film?
"why yes it will"
Will the HVX be better than the Cinealta?
"Of course it will, what a silly question"
How much time can be recorded on a 8 gig card at 720P 24?
"Yes it will" :)

to be fair the poster did revive a 4-month-old thread rather than starting a new one. it seems pretty reasonable to expect that new info could have become available in that time.

judging the loyalty its owners show to the dvx, i would think its safe to say the minimum performance would at least be equal to dvx100(a). Knowing panasonic, and jan.... and her "they're highly focused on getting the best sensitivity, dynamic range, and resolution that they can" paraphrased quote.
I am not worried. not in the least.
There is a reason Panasonic didint rush out a HD cam ASA sony did. they know, we will wait for somehtign better, with alot of the flaws worked out.
Annecdote: At b&H today: Saw the Z1 hooked up to a HD LCD monitor. in Hd mode. Actually looked great. and was thinking to myslef, hey HDV doesnt look bad at all, infact it looks amazing! then i slapped my self in the face when realised, the monitor image was drawings its feed straight out of camera. I still havent seen HDV in action. But the machine is actually pretty nice. Its just that it looks like Ubersharp PD 170. Pure video. Which is ok. its just that its video. After messing with 24p for a year, i cant look back........ I never knew how much i would miss 24p until i was faced with the thought of not having it. ( i use it for everything!!!!!!)
