If anyone can find out, I'd like to know whether 4-channel audio is just a format specification or a feature of the camera... that is, will it indeed be able to record 4-channels at once?

Also, if anyone can answer... does anyone know of a camera, or plans for one, that has digital audio input?

The new Sony XDCam cameras have 4x AES/EBU digital in/out.

Not sure if any other cameras have this feature, but they ought to.

I suspect 4 channel audio is as you put it, merely a format specification on the HVX - it definitely only has 2 XLR inputs. It's possible that the XLRs double as AES inputs as they do on high end audio recorders... but I doubt they will (If they do I'll go nuts because I've just invested in a Sound Devices recorder for audio aquisition)

I thought I saw on the controls, settings for 4 channels on this camera.
Perhaps, there are 2 channels wired inside the camera going to the stereo mic onboard, and the xlr's are for shotgun mic and one empty for something else.
