View Full Version : Looks like...

I might be getting XL2 on my birthday instead of DVX :( Was going to buy a camera myself around that time, but found out about the present and, why would I decline it  Just having hard time trying to convince my dad, that Panasonic can compete with his favourite Canon.
Not that I don't like XL2, of course no - I think it looks awesome and I like the native 16:9 and it's higher resolution over DVX, but I keep hearing that Panny offers more film-like footage and that is really what I'm after the most. Plus I could care less about interchangable lenses the way it works, unless the manual 16x servo-zoom is really all that great. Oh and I absolutely love the look of DVX with a good 4x4 mattebox and other accessories, it looks so damn sexy and "pro".

Sooo what I want to ask is:

1) Is the 24p footage from Canon really less film-like by it's motion parameters or w/e, and is the difference (if there is any) attainable in post?

2) Show me some of your best, most film-like/most professional XL2 footage, please.

3) Show me your pimped-out rigs :cheesy: (Because in what I've seen so far, Canon doesn't look as serious as mentioned DVX, sorta, due to it's color or form-factor)

Thanks in advance

EDIT: Oh I didn't mean your own movies, just any good looking clips, I can't seem to find...

1) From what I've seen, the 24p modes are really close. The XL2's extra resolution trick does make the footage a little more on the smoother side, but still filmlike. Most would see no difference at all if doing side-by-side comparison.

2) I don't own an XL2, I've only played with one in my local camera shop. Be sure to hold it right, I was holding it wrong when I first held it. You could try looking around in the DV for the Masses section at DVinfo.net or even here under the Screen Grabs/Clips/Footage section. Some of the posts may say "XL2 yada yada" or "Yada Yada shot on XL2". Look around, the videos are there. Don't hope too much for fully uncompressed stuff, most of the stuff I've seen is compressed a lot for web streaming. =P

3) See above. But there are many other people with fully decked out XL1/1s/2 systems, they all look the same. Try putting "28 Days Later XL1s" into your search engine or check the XL1/1s section of DVInfo.net . I believe they have a thread or two about "Post your rigs" or whatever.

Neither of them look like film. They look like some kind of hybrid film/video, even in 24p mode. The xl2 does 16x9 natively and that's huge in my book. Also looks the biz. But it's a b*tch to carry around.

Check out this thread http://www.dvxuser.com/V3/showthread.php?t=23606 That's a really nice clip. You may have already seen it because it's still on page 1, but if not, there you go

Thank you, Jack. Digging thru DVinfo forums atm, looking for stuff... god, they suck... the forums that is

Zig, I know neither of them really looks like film, but if there wasn't 24p to try and emulate it, we wouldn't have DVXuser. I know that much of what makes video look film'ish comes out from post, so I was wondering about the difference between 2 cams, that can't be achieved there.

zMike, tried watching it, but the video is gone from that site :( Found it on DVinfo too, but their link is bad aswell.

Hey xl70e3, check out this short scene I wrote and shot when I first got my xl2. It's at
www.triggerstreet.com Search: ( welcome to elsewhere ) <-------- The xl2 in my opinion
is a better bet, I almost bought a DVX as well. I'll try to post a pic of my setup. Trust me, the picture quality is very impressive. In the end, nothing beats a solid story, how many crappy 35mm films have left you sick to your stomach?
