Here's the "super-8" mockup from NAB2004:

Here's a rough sketch by "satellitebunny" based on the preshow picture:

NOTE: Thought this would be interesting for those that visit only this board and not others. I made available the thread link and given credit where due.

Another week. Guess I just have to throw myself into writing and wait.

You'll see pics the first day (assuming there's a camera or mockup of the camera there). There will be so many indie reporters, people with video cameras/digicams/cell phone cameras, that you'll see everything the first day posted on the web.

I'm hoping it's a X14 lens range. That would satisify me!

Yes a 14x fully man lens would be great even if its a fixed one. but hopefully there will ba an wide angle adapter like the one for the 100a.

That mock up picture is close to what the sheet picture looks like,,,,also there is plenty of room for a tape drive.

Yes the HVX200 looks like its the perfect size to have both a tape drive and p2 slots. I would have loved that option to shoot on tape so I can save money for the p2 cards.

Has anyone "really" looked at the cloth shrouded HVX photo? There's some funkiness in the photo between the camera body & the lens shade. Could they be teasing us by placing the lens shade in front of the camera to make it appear as though it has a lens attached, but when they raise the cloth they unveil an interchangable lens system???? Hmmmm??? :)

Just having fun with the speculation. :)

When we say "a fixed lens", how fixed is it? The reason I ask... if it's a completely fixed lens as in you can't remove it at all, that would make it unusable with the P+S technik mini-35 then, huh? Thoughts?

Not at all. The mini35 works with the DVX, PD150, VX2000, Sony FX1 and Z1... all of them are "fixed lens" cameras. It also works with the XL1 and XL2, of course, which are removable lens cameras.

The thing is, the mini35 *requires* a lens of some type between it and the camera. On the "fixed lens" cameras, it uses the camera's lens... on the XL1 and XL2, you remove the camera's lens but then you have to install a "relay lens", so there's still a lens there.

It could be argued that you'll get slightly higher quality from a compact, simple, one-element relay lens rather than a complex 10x zoom lens, yes. But I've used it on the DVX and the results were superb, so I would expect no less from the HVX.

Have to wonder the development time of a new "relay" lens for the HD100.
I am not saying it will be out of reach, but it will take time to manufacture.
Sure, they'll have to make a kit for the HVX200 as well for proper fit with the
potentially different lens diameter and probably different bayonet mount, but it
shouldn't be as complicated.

Thanks for noting the fact that the mini35 used a relay lens on the XL cams, Barry.
That is something not everyone realises.

Barry thanks for the response. I always love your posts and consider you a guru of guru's here. Thought this might interest you. It's a correspondence between myself and Tino Liberatore at P+S Technik in Germany about this very subject:

"Regarding the compatibility of the Mini35 and the new Panasonic HVX-200, I can not tell you much. I know we are adapting the Mini35 to the new JVC HD100U. It is quite possible that the Panasonic will be adapted as well. I am sure after NAB we will know more."

Sounds to me like P+S has to go out of their way to modify their adapter to work with specific cameras as opposed to a one unit fits all kind of thing. I guess this makes sense regarding the HVX because no one knows for sure what kind of lens is going to be on this thing. I agree with you that it would be hard to believe they would give us anything less than what's already on the DVX-100 though. But do you think this might be something P+S will have to adapt to? Thoughts?

Definitely they have to adapt it. I've used the mini35 on the DVX, PD150, and even hack-rigged it to a JVC HD1. Each camera needs a specially-designed connector kit. Especially the JVC and XL1/XL2, where they have to create a lens specifically for it, but with the other cameras they have to hard-manufacture a diopter/lens attachment piece.

The main body of the mini35 is $8,000 and can be used with just about any camera, but you have to buy the connecting kit for each specific camera, and those pieces run about $1600 or so.

So yes, they will most likely make an HVX adapter, as well as an HD100. It all depends on how the cameras perform in the marketplace.

I'm really interested to see the micro35 and others. I wonder how they will fair in the quality department. I'm thinking of getting more into camera work, and build a reel and I feel a nice shallow DoF will sell it some - assuming the work is good :)
