Pure speculation and mostly just out of personal desire (NOT FACTS or INSIDE INFORMATION!):
Panasonic NAB2011 prediction:
New flagship film-style mock-up shown (total break from hpx-XXXX), new super35mm cmos sensor, Pl mount, color viewfinder, P2 eng style body, AVC-ultra, same i/o as hpx3700. Priced noticeably less than Sony/Arri's 35mm flag-ship offerings.
Why?
Today's top purchasable digital filmstyle cameras are all 35mm: Alexa, Sony f35, Red
(panasonic doesnt have a pro 35mm offering.)
Varicam was most desireable for filmstyle video productions for a long-time, Pro hpx series although big sellers in Tv/news/sports markets- never seemed to gain a foothold in the film style rental market compared to sony's offerings because at that point there was a 35mm offering with the f35 (also Red).
To add to this in 2009/2010 it seemed as sales were hurting for panasonic's flag-ship models which is why they offered basically 1/2 off pricing on their top models through cheap trade-in's. (hpx flag-ship series)
Panasonic allready has the memorycard infrastructure and codec figured out (avc-ultra/p2) to compete with Sony SR memory cards and codec- just no 35mm body to pair it with.
Does this seem plausible or do you guys think panasonic doesnt care to re-enter the flag-ship filmstyle market again? Id sure love them to.
