View Full Version : April Contest?

I saw one litttle tidbit about an April contest in the post about the March results. Something about mystery and a waffle? Is there an official April post somewhere that I'm missing?

Also - I read the rules and have one question. My idea involves being awakened by a radio alarm clock playing a specific "tune". Can I do that or does that break the "copyright" rule? It would only involve a few seconds of music but it is required for my "idea".

I'm really excited about attempting my first contest entry! Now I just have to figure out how to get it online???

And it will "SIRIUSLY" suck big time if I'm the only entry and win by default, so you guys/gals better get to it!

I'm working on the "official announcement". Surely, you can figure out how to execute your idea without any copyright infringement. Part of making films is coming up with ideas and stategies so you don't use other's copyrighted material. If an unauthorized use of copyrighted material is integral to your film--then come up with another idea. I'll be happy to help you get your film online as long as I have some advance notice, but keep brainstorming until you come up with something that doesn't infringe.

Yeh I understand. Just the idea I had sort of revolved around a five second audio clip....
Thanks for the offer to post the video clip. I may have a solution for that as well.

What if it's just the local radio DJ's gabbing? Is that an infringement?

Well some sins are worse than others. You could phone the DJ and ask permission--you might even get the DJ to do a special bit for free. You could also get a friend to do their best DJ impression. This is actually a pretty common issue for short films.

Don't worry about being the only entrant. I just got my DVX last week and I'm psyched to do something with it (no gigs for a couple of weeks.)

Where can I find the complete contest rules? Thanks.

I'm thinking about entering this month, too. It will be good practice for getting acquainted with my new DVX. :D

The rules are simple--

Use a DVX100
Five minutes or shorter in length
No copyright violations
Try to keep the filesize as small as possible
Host your own file (if at all possible)
All April films must be MYSTERIES
All April films must include a WAFFLE as a prop
Films are due by midnight on the last night of the month (send me the link)

what like a waffle that you eat or any waffle like material? or is that left up to our own discretion?

rule one sux.

Why don't you make rule one read, shot in 24p?

TC

Because that would mean that you could participate Matt, and we can't have that.

I think the complication arrives from sponsorship issues; i.e. Panasonic has been kind enough to throw some booty into the mix; i.e. Magic Bullet was courtesy of Jan I believe? The DVX book; although written by Barry I beleive is being supported by Panasonic? NOt sure on any of these details; but I believe, MattC, this is where we have some conflict.

Barry_Green

No, that's not it. I donated the book directly, Jan donated some tapes, Rush donated a lens adapter -- so it's open to anyone to donate prizes. There's no Panasonic-only affiliation going on.

Heck, I say let Matt in. Even if it's just for one month, the theme of the contest could be "any camera, regardless of whether it's a DVX" or something. I mean, it can be a DVX festival most of the time, but how about a DVXUser member festival, at least one month? (especially when last month we only got ONE entry!)

MattC

Wow, thanks. Like I said before, I don't want to win anything, I'd just like to play you know? Maybe a non-DVX honorable mention or something if I do good?

I actually like the idea of 24p only contest. So I guess Sony is out of the picture. You're welcome to enter Matt.

So this month it can be shot on any camera? Just want to make sure...

TC
04-09-2005, 01:02 PM
Well now wait a sec. Some people on our lovely message board like shooting in 30p. Not being one of them, I couldn't say why. So a 24p only rule would leave DVX owner who favor other frame rates out of the running.

I'm in no way against letting other cams in (even if it is Matt's stupid XL2) but let's be fair about it. Equal treatment and all that jazz.

Not this month, but I'll work something out. The rules stay as is until I figure out something reasonable and post a notice.

Back to the original post. I "Think" if you use 4 bars or less of a song there is no problem. Not absolutely sure though.

how is everyones april entry this month? I havnt started yet but will get to it soon,,, i hope someone else enters this month! please please please if you cant find muisc: www.google.com (http://www.google.com/) type in royalty free music, it will cost about $200 for 10 instrumental songs, which is allright.

In spirit of getting more competition i think there should be an awsome prize, everyone post what prize you think someone should donate!, here is what i think the prize should be!:

5400mah or 5000mah Batteries! (you can never have enough batteries!)

&

Panasonic AY-DVM63MQ tapes (lots and lots of them!)

Considering that the last contest had a grand total of *one* entry... well, clean it up and make the best of it that you can, and then submit it! What do you have to lose?

I submitted an entry. It was a great learning exercise. I look forward to hearing everyone's comments about how to make it better.

On a related note, what program do you guys use to compress your videos?

Only because you don't get many waffle's in films nowadays..shame really...they can really spice up a story...a mystery story.
I want titles like.
Where's that Waffle.
Waffle trouble.
The case of the mysterious...Waffle.
Secret Waffle.
Undercover Waffle.
