Hey all,

I shot a short film using a DVX and am currently color-correcting in After Effects. Most of the footage was shot in 24P though some was also shot in 30P. When I first exported, however, I noticed I was getting a lot of stair-stepping or "jaggies" on the straight lines in my image. Having been tipped off by a classmate, I went ahead and tried rendering using the "lower field first" option. Though it made the stair-stepping go almost completely away, it introduced a new, odd artifact into my image. Now whenever there's movement on the screen I can clearly make out the two different fields (one will be where it should be while the other will be lagging behind. It almost makes it look like the moving object is shifting ever so slightly).

Anybody know a way I can fix this? I love the smoothness of lines the lower field first option provides me, but the weird shifting look it provides my image makes it look like junk!

Any help would be really appreciated!

Are you viewing your final interlaced file on a television or just on your monitor? If you're viewing it on your computer monitor, it will look a bit funky. The true test is to play it on a broadcast monitor or TV. Dump it out to a dvd or tape and watch it outside your computer. It should look just fine. Since PC monitors aren't interlaced, playing interlaced files on them to preview can lead to displaying issues.

Thanks, I'll give that a shot tomorrow!

Did you interpret your footage in AE? To see your footage at full quality you need to remove the pulldown. Ctrl - F to interpret. (Cmd -F on the mac) Select 24PA pulldown for 24PA footage, and regular pulldown for 24PN. That usually makes a difference for me in the quality and removing jaggies.
